The mystery and charm of New Mexico have been captured in color in this enchanting book of photographs which explores New Mexico's magical qualities. It is a captivating portrait which shows New Mexico in details seldom seen before. Here are the pueblos, the Spanish missions, the dances, the prayers and festivals, the painters and writers and potters at work. Here are the towering rock formations, the gorges of the Rio Grande, the fields and flowers, and the bone white gypsum sands. For over twenty-five years Marcia Keegan has wandered the length and breadth of the state, photographing with artistry and a sensitivity to the land and its people.

Elaine Sciolino, the former Paris bureau chief of The New York Times, invites us on a tour of her favourite Parisian street. "I can never be sad on the rue des Martyrs", Sciolino explains as she celebrates the area's rich history and vibrant lives. While many cities suffer from the levelling effects of globalisation, the rue des Martyrs maintains its distinct allure. Sciolino reveals the charms and idiosyncrasies of this street and its residents-the Tunisian greengrocer, the husband-and-wife cheesemongers, the showman who's been running a transvestite cabaret for more than half a century, the owner of a 100-year-old bookstore, the woman who repairs eighteenth-century mercury barometers-making Paris come alive in all its majesty. The Only Street in Paris will make readers hungry for Paris and for the kind of street life that is all too quickly disappearing.

This guidebook, Via Ferratas of the Italian Dolomites Volume 2, is the second in a series of two published by Cicerone Press, which now fully replaces the previous Cicerone guidebook, Scrambles in the Dolomites, adding many new routes through the southern, Brenta and Lake Garda areas.Volume two documents southern Dolomites Via Ferrata routes in the major mountain ranges of Civetta, Schiara and Pala as well as those to the west in the Brenta. A significant addition (and, as far as we are aware, not previously published in any English-language guidebook) is the inclusion of routes around the northern end of Lake Garda and the Piccole Dolomites north of Vicenza. Here the mountains are generally lower and you can enjoy ferrata climbing over a much extended season, with some routes accessible for most of the year. While volume one covered the eastern, northern and central areas of the Dolomites, book two completes the picture, focusing on the southern, Brenta and Lake Garda areas.

Rough Stuff Cycling in the Alps (Paperback, 3rd New edition): Fred Wright Rough Stuff Cycling in the Alps (Paperback, 3rd New edition)
Fred Wright
R678 Discovery Miles 6 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Rough Stuff Cycling in the Alps guide book was compiled by Fred Wright and self-published in 2002. It preserved the collective wisdom of generations of riders who pioneered riding the 'rough stuff' - riders who headed into the high peaks armed only with touring bikes and canvas rucksacks, sandals and floppy hats, crossing mountain ranges and joining up towns and famous cols on little-known gravel tracks, dirt trails and even icy climbs(!). This was gravel biking before gravel bikes - mountain biking before mountain bikes, in some cases. The book contained nearly 300 routes, ranging from easy unsurfaced roads at little more than 1000m to steep footpaths above 3000m, and from the southern French Alps to Switzerland, the Dolomites and the Austrian Tirol. The entries often included detailed personal accounts of when the route was ridden, and the book also offered tips for beginners, advice on equipment and maps, and suggestions for routes not covered in the guide. More and more of us are choosing to head off the beaten track with our bikes. Adventure touring, gravel biking, bikepacking - whatever you call it, we all want to get out there. The Alps are one of cycling's ultimate playgrounds, and this guide is an invaluable resource of practical information about cycling in some of the most remote and beautiful places in Europe. This new edition includes; - 16 new hand-drawn maps, showing the areas covered and the routes described, so that readers can easily locate the main towns and road passes, and the potential unpaved tracks and paths to navigate between them - A beautiful overall Alps map illustrated by Stefan Amato of Pannier.cc - An extended colour photo section. Fred included just four photos of his adventures. We will have at least 16 pages of original photos taken by Fred and other pioneers of rough stuff riding in the Alps. See the pics in this campaign for a selection. - A new introduction by Fred Wright himself, explaining the genesis of the book and recounting his riding life. A new postscript by James Olsen (founder of the Torino-Nice Rally, who used the guide to create the TNR) on rough stuff in the 21st century. This will give advice for using the book in the age of mountain bikes and gravel bikes, bikepacking luggage, 3G and GPS - Updated information - for example, on the availability of paper maps and adding a few suggested routes where possible.

A People's Guide to New York City (Paperback): Carolina Bank Munoz, Penny Lewis, Emily Tumpson Molina A People's Guide to New York City (Paperback)
Carolina Bank Munoz, Penny Lewis, Emily Tumpson Molina
R585 Discovery Miles 5 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This alternative guidebook for one of the world's most popular tourist destinations explores all five boroughs to reveal a people's New York City. The sites and stories of A People's Guide to New York City shift our perception of what defines New York, placing the passion, determination, defeats, and victories of its people at the core. Delving into the histories of New York's five boroughs, you will encounter enslaved Africans in revolt, women marching for equality, workers on strike, musicians and performers claiming streets for their art, and neighbors organizing against landfills and industrial toxins and in support of affordable housing and public schools. The streetscapes that emerge from these groups' struggles bear the traces, and this book shows you where to look to find them. New York City is a preeminent global city, serving as the headquarters for hundreds of multinational firms and a world-renowned cultural hub for fashion, art, and music. It is among the most multicultural cities in the world and also one of the most segregated cities in the United States. The people that make this global city function-immigrants, people of color, and the working classes-reside largely in the so-called outer boroughs, outside the corporations, neon, and skyscrapers of Manhattan. A People's Guide to New York City expands the scope and scale of traditional guidebooks, providing an equitable exploration of the diverse communities throughout the city. Through the stories of over 150 sites across the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island as well as thematic tours and contemporary and archival photographs, a people's New York emerges, one in which collective struggles for justice and freedom have shaped the very landscape of the city.

Mozambique (Paperback, 8th Revised edition): Philip Briggs Mozambique (Paperback, 8th Revised edition)
Philip Briggs
R616 R501 Discovery Miles 5 010 Save R115 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Now in its eighth edition, Bradt's Mozambique remains the most established and sole standalone guide to this alluring African country. In-depth coverage of wildlife, history, culture, and diving and snorkelling is complemented by invaluable, up-to-date practical advice on travel and accommodation, presented in an easy-to-navigate geographical structure covering north, central and southern Mozambique. Originally written by Philip Briggs, this new edition has been updated by Africa experts Huw and Kate Hennessy, authors of several previous Bradt guides. Mozambique is a country of two halves. The tourism-savvy south offers romantic tropical beaches, luxury lodges and world-class diving, plus the tree-lined capital of Maputo, a city oozing Afro-Mediterranean flair. In contrast, the less-developed north is one of Africa's last frontiers, with excitingly vast game reserves and idyllic coastal panoramas that entice intrepid travellers and those hankering after barefoot luxury. With its national park set-up expanded and refurbished, Mozambique looks set to reclaim its standing as one of Africa's top safari destinations. Moreover, although one of the continent's fastest developing tourist countries, it still offers opportunities to experience 'quintessential Africa'. As Mozambique approaches 50 years since independence, development boosted by one of Africa's highest economic growth rates and a swift resurgence following 2019's devastating cyclone are drawing tourists back to a forest-clad interior descending to 2,500km of pristine, palm-fringed coastline. Bradt's Mozambique reveals a country dotted with natural, historical, cultural, and architectural wonders that reflect a history that fuses exploration, trade, and culture. Highlights include the UNESCO world heritage site of Ilha de Mocambique, a 16th-century Arab and Portuguese trading post; ancient rock art at Chinhamapere; adventurous journeys by train and Arab dhow; the birdlife of Mount Namuli, accessed from the tea-plantation town of Gurue; windsurfing in Pemba and surfing in Tofo; and diving or snorkelling in biologically rich seas, including around Bazaruto, home to some of Africa's last remaining dugongs, five of the world's seven endangered sea turtle species, and two thousand species of fish. Whether you are a culture vulture or wildlife enthusiast, a watersports enthusiast or honeymooning couple, the in-depth coverage and practical advice for all budgets means that Bradt's Mozambique has everything you need to plan a thrilling holiday.

"The Inn Way...to the English Lake District": 90 miles, 7 days, 44 pubs. First published in 1998 when it was picked out as "The Sunday Times" 'Travel Book of the Week' and awarded 'Highly Commended' in the Lakeland Book of the Year awards, "The Inn Way...to the English Lake District" has been rewalked, revised and updated for this new 2nd Edition, which is published in spring 2011. "The Inn Way...to the English Lake District" charts a 7 day circular walk through the heart of the Lake District, covering 90 miles (145-km) of paths and passing 44 Lakeland inns along the way. This book is the complete and unique guide to this highly-acclaimed long distance circular walk through the English Lake District. This book is much more than the sum of its detailed maps. Route descriptions, historical quotations and well-researched background describe the area including the remote and beautiful Western Lakes, popular villages such as Rydal, Grasmere and Elterwater, famed for their literary connections, as well as the 44 traditional Lakeland pubs along the way. Through hand drawn maps, with practical information about accommodation, services, public transport, and the ales in the hostelries along "The Inn Way...to the English Lake District", Mark Reid's newly revised guide gives all of the information needed to appreciate and enjoy the geology, wildlife and history encountered along this six day walk. Above all, the book contains a wealth of history, folklore and perceptive commentary that will help bring the landscape to life. "The Inn Way...to the English Lake District" captures the very essence of Lakeland, from the majestic mountains to the lush valleys, serene lakes, beautiful villages and cosy pubs. The walking route starts and finishes at Ambleside, with suggested overnight stops at Rosthwaite, Braithwaite, Buttermere, Boot, Broughton-in-Furness and Coniston.

What could be more American than the country fair? For more than 250 years, local fairs have been a symbol of grassroots America. They're a place to show pride in the homegrown and handmade, connect with neighbors and friends, and compete for the best draft horses and dairy cows, pumpkins, and cherry pie. Photographs of 13 country fairs in eastern and central Pennsylvania capture scenes of farm implements, sideshows, funnel cakes, cotton candy, and the magic of the midway after dark. For young and old, urbanites and country folk, regular fair-goers and rookies, this book shows why millions of people across the nation flock to the fair and continue the competitions between neighbors and friends that have gone on for years-and sometimes generations.
