The pastels are made in Northumberland and contain only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues, instead of adding white or black to the colours. The result is intense, vibrant colour not muddied by the blending of colours.

Unison's pastels contain very little binder, making them truly soft and smooth. They are mixed to meticulous recipes and are based on traditional pigments such as cadmiums, cobalts and natural and synthetic earths. Pastels measure approximately 2-1/8in long × 5/8in diameter (54 mm × 16 mm). Sticks vary slightly due to the hand-making process.

Soft pastel crayons have extremely intense colours, a silky smooth flow of colour, and are very easy to mix and blend. The brilliant, vivid results achieved make them ideal for amateur artists, school art lessons and creative handicraft enthusiasts. The soft pastel crayons are well suited to different types of paper (e.g. flock paper), but fantastic effects can also be achieved on other surfaces. For preserving your pastel work, you should spray it with a fixative after completion.

Our Soft Pastels are made carefully by hand which makes them very soft with a smooth, buttery consistency. They have a low binder to pigment ratio which makes them rich and luminous, allowing for both subtle and bold mark making.

Their excellent lightfast qualities mean that pastel paintings created with them will not deteriorate over time. The four fluorescent colours are the only exception; like all fluorescent colours they are not lightfast.

High quality drawing paper from Fabriano. 160g/m2, high rag content, acid-free, pH neutral and with high archival permanence. 36 lightfast colours. Grainy, rough paper which is neutrally sized. Very good pigment uptake and therefore best suited to soft and oil pastel but also for pencil, grey and brown chalk, gouache and acrylic.

It took over three years, at the turn of the 20th Century, to formulate the Sennelier range of Extra Soft Pastels “à l’écu” and thus to create one of the largest chromatic range of pastels. Throughout the century, this range of tones has evolved, but the heart of its making remains unchanged.

A Sennelier extra soft pastel is composed of high quality pure pigment grounded with a natural transparent binder. The high quality composition of “à l’écu” pastels is the result of a perfect balance between binder and pigment. For gradient shades, increasing amounts of mineral fines are added, ultimately tending towards white. The exceptional brightness is the result of the pigment and of the natural mineral fines discovered by Sennelier in 1905 and that have been used ever since.

Conte crayons with their 6x6mm cross-section offer a range of 84 colours, 14 tones of which are specifically designed for sketching. The crayons are very soft to use and are manufactured using natural pigments (iron oxide, carbon black, titanium dioxide), clay (kaolin) and a binder (cellulose ether), which are then baked after being extruded and dried. The degree of baking varies the grade (hardness:H/ softness:B) of the black and white crayons.Please note: due to trading agreements we are unable to ship this product outside of the UK and EU.

Oil-based pastel crayons offer wonderful opportunities of applying both extremely intense, strong colours and delicate pastel tones. Due to their high luminosity, the crayons are ideal for encaustic as well as various pastel and scraping techniques.

Depending on the desired artistic effect, you can use your finger to wipe them or blend them with a paintbrush and turpentine (or white spirit).
