Underpinned by a sound evidence base and peppered with practical examples throughout, this book contains essential knowledge and skills that will enable mental health nurses to help service users transform their health and wellbeing, and live longer, healthier and more satisfying lives. " Patrick CallaghanProfessor of Mental Nursing Head of School of Health SciencesUniversity of Nottingham"This new edition of an established text will be welcomed by students, academics and service users. Healthcare outcomes will be improved if practitioners follow Mike's advice throughout the text, most particularly: One small step we can take, which will make a huge difference to the physical health of mental health service users, is to regularly monitor and screen for adverse drug reactions (p.184)." Assessment and Care Planning in Mental Health Nursing (Paperback, Ed): Nick Wrycraft Assessment and Care Planning in Mental Health Nursing (Paperback, Ed)
Nick Wrycraft
R1,068 Discovery Miles 10 680 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Assessment of mental health problems is a challenging area of practice that covers a range of symptoms and behaviours - and involves building a trust relationship with service users while also using specialist skills. Using a values-based approach focused on engaging and working in partnership with the service user, this book is designed to take you from the core building blocks of assessment through to practice-based guidance about mental health behaviours, and concludes with case studies 'on the ground'. The first section of the book explores core aspects of assessment such as communication skills and engaging the service user, and explores how assessment guides the nursing process as a whole. The next section will be ideal for quick reference during practice and looks at 23 different clinical behaviours that nurses will assess, under 4 categories: Physical factors in mental health Behavioural aspects in mental health The role of thoughts in mental health Feelings in mental health The final section gives 4 case studies of different assessment stories which relate to the different types of clinical behaviour you will encounter. This practical book is essential reading for student nurses and all healthcare staff involved in the assessment of people with mental health problems. "I would highly recommend this book to all mental health nursing students. Whilst the focus is on assessment and care planning; knowledge and skills on a range of essential areas are present in this text. It is an essential handbook for key mental health nursing skills. Case studies are presented with clarity, and Nick Wrycraft is clearly committed to nurses learning from service users, which is essential for values-based practice." Julia Terry, Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing, Swansea University, UK "This text is a good fit for mental health nursing students new to assessment and care planning, providing a practical rather than academic approach to these important aspects of the role." Dr Janine Archer Lecturer School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Work, University of Manchester, UK "Dr. Nick Wrycraft has done tremendously in making available the maiden edition of this book. Assessment and Care Planning in Mental Health Nursing will be a valued reference book for mental health student nurses who are new to the process of assessment and care planning. The book will therefore go a long way to provide educational and learning support to pre-registration nursing students as well as the newly qualified mental health nurses in practice." The Oxford Handbook of Traumatic Stress Disorders (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): J.Gayle Beck, Denise M. Sloan The Oxford Handbook of Traumatic Stress Disorders (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
J.Gayle Beck, Denise M. Sloan
R3,619 Discovery Miles 36 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The experience of traumatic events is a near-universal, albeit unfortunate, part of the human experience. Given how many individuals are exposed to trauma, it is interesting to question why some individuals are resilient in the face of trauma while others go on to develop chronic post-traumatic stress. Throughout the relatively brief history of the psychological study of trauma, a number of themes have consistently emerged; many of these themes remain essential elements within our current study of traumatic stress disorders, as summarized within this volume. The Oxford Handbook of Traumatic Stress Disorders addresses the current landscape of research and clinical knowledge surrounding traumatic stress disorders. Bringing together a group of highly-regarded experts, this volume is divided into six sections, together summarizing the current state of knowledge about 1) classification and phenomenology, 2) epidemiology and special populations, 3) contributions from theory, 4) assessment, 5) prevention and early intervention efforts, and 6) treatment of individuals with post-trauma mental health symptoms. Throughout the volume, attention is paid to identifying current controversies in the literature and highlighting directions that hold promise for future work. In this new second edition, experts on traumatic stress contribute chapters on topics spanning classification, epidemiology and special populations, theory, assessment, prevention/early intervention, treatment, and dissemination and treatment. This expanded, updated volume provides research updates and highlights areas that need continued clarification through additional research. With new chapters on adverse childhood experiences, suicide following the experience of trauma, and evidence-based treatments, the second edition provides an up-to-date and valuable resource for clinicians and investigators with interest in traumatic stress disorders.

Victoria Clarke, Andrew Walsh
R532 Discovery Miles 5 320 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

In order to provide sound, person-centred care, mental health nursing students need a thorough understanding of theory alongside the ability to translate this knowledge into practice. It can be difficult to apply ideas from the classroom and books when learning how to work with mental health service users for the first time. That is why the theoretical aspects of this book are presented alongside realistic accounts of nursing practice.
Fundamentals of Mental Health Nursing is a case-based and service user centred textbook for mental health nursing students. Designed to support students throughout their pre-registration studies, the text covers the essential knowledge required to provide high quality nursing care. Contributions from real service users and cases of fictional clients are explored in detail to provide excellent transferable skills for practice.
Dedicated chapters explore fundamental nursing skills and mental health law before providing a case-based exploration of the areas and subjects that will be encountered by students in university and placement. Practice-based chapters introduce students to the needs of a diverse range of fictional clients and explain how the skills of communication, assessment, care planning and monitoring can be applied. Each chapter provides a sample care plan explaining why and how clinical decisions are made, so that students can develop their own skills and practice. The text opens with clear advice to help students succeed in their studies and concludes with a wealth of practical and thoughtful advice on becoming a professional and getting that first job.

The Comfort Garden: Tales from the Trauma Unit When the Caregiver Needs Solace

The Comfort Garden is Laurie Barkin's account of the five years she worked as a psychiatric nurse on the surgical/trauma unit at San Francisco General Hospital. Told against the backdrop of patients who survived motor vehicle accidents, falls, fires, fists, bullets, and knives, The Comfort Garden is a metaphor for the emotional support caregivers need. The story illuminates the issues of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma that may develop in caregivers when exposure to tragedy becomes routine.

The Comfort Garden will appeal to health care professionals, firefighters, police, war veterans, social workers, journalists, students, and anyone whose life is touched by trauma.

"The Comfort Garden reveals the real world of human-to-human caring at its highest level." Jean Watson, RN, PhD, author of Human Caring Science: A Theory of Nursing

"Laurie is that rare health professional with a gift for narrative and a story to tell. This is an important book for any health care worker, but especially for those of us who consider ourselves traumatic stress specialists. It reinforces the values and the spirit that brought us into the field. And it reminds us of the obstacles we face every day: human cruelty, social injustice, dwindling resources. Read this. You'll be better for it." Frank M Ochberg MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Michigan State University

Laurie Barkin "sensitively documents the process of vicarious trauma how caregivers like herself internalize their patients trauma." San Francisco Chronicle

"In an age when hospitals have been turning to quicker-acting medications, faster discharges, and fewer deep and meaningful conversations with patients, Laurie Barkin takes the opposite position. She urges us to make the time to use our knowledge of psychodynamic psychotherapy to help traumatized people early in the course of their distress." Lenore Terr MD, psychiatrist, author of Too Scared to Cry

"Whenever we walk into a hospital or a doctor's office we often assume that the patients are somehow broken, sick or frightened and that the nurses and doctors are whole, healthy and brave. In stories that prove these assumptions false, Laurie Barkin shows us how permeable the line actually is between the cared for and the caregiver." Cortney Davis, author of The Heart's Truth: Essays on the Art of Nursing

Psychological and Cognitive Impact of Critical Illness (Paperback): O Joseph Bienvenu, Ramona O. Hopkins, Christina Jones Psychological and Cognitive Impact of Critical Illness (Paperback)
O Joseph Bienvenu, Ramona O. Hopkins, Christina Jones
R2,141 Discovery Miles 21 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Neuropsychiatric problems after critical illness are receiving increasing attention, particularly in the critical care medicine literature, but mental health and primary care clinicians should also be interested in these common problems, given the growing number of critical illness survivors who need care. Patients frequently come out of the intensive care unit (ICU) with horrifying distorted memories and don't understand what has happened to them. Not only are patients debilitated with ICU-acquired weakness and cognitive impairment, they are traumatized by actual experiences (e.g., shortness of breath and pain) and distorted memories (of being tortured, raped, assaulted, or imprisoned) shaped by delirium. Patients' family members are also frequently quite distressed, and children surviving critical illnesses appear to have similar experiences to adults. This book provides an overview of the nature and epidemiology of cognitive and other psychiatric problems in this growing population, and it addresses the small but growing literature on prevention and early intervention efforts. Addressing these problems successfully will require collaborative interventions, both in-ICU and post-ICU.

"Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: The Field of Knowledge" provides an analytical and critical introduction to the current state of knowledge in psychiatric and mental health nursing in the UK.

The first section of the book explores current professional, disciplinary and educational contexts. In the second section leading UK authors from diverse academic settings provide case studies of the knowledge and scientific traditions they draw on to inform their practice, understand patient needs, and foster different aspects of nursing practice.

In the final section the UK authors comment on each other's accounts. Those chapters and comments are then discussed by leading overseas academics to provide an invaluable international perspective. The final stage is a sociologically-informed analysis which identifies sociopolitical trends in order to make sense of the UK and international views. The editor then assesses the potential for intellectual integration and collective advance in psychiatric and mental health nursing.

With growing access to health information, people who suffer from depression are increasingly eager to play an active role in the management of their symptoms. The goal of self-management is to support patients in monitoring and managing their symptoms and provide them with additional resources to promote recovery, enhance quality of life, and prevent relapse. For clinicians, self-management holds promise for improving practice efficiency and efficacy by helping patients maximize their improvement outside of treatment sessions. Self-Management of Depression is written for clinicians who wish to empower their patients to take more active steps to manage depression. Chapters cover care management, self-assessment, exercise, self-help books and computer programs, meditation, and peer-support groups and strategies for how to incorporate self-management into a treatment plan are described. Reproducible handouts to support patients are also available online. This book is relevant to clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers and primary care physicians.
