Road Transport And Health (Paperback): BMA Road Transp Road Transport And Health (Paperback)
BMA Road Transp
R1,090 Discovery Miles 10 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Transport affects everyone--it enables access to social activities, employment, leisure, goods and services. But with traffic levels estimated to nearly double by the year 2025, there is cause for concern. Strategies to reduce the harmful effects of motor vehicles such as emission controls are welcome, but are likely to be outweighed by the projected increases in motor traffic over the next 25 years.

Without a fundamental shift in policy away from the care to other forms of transport, it is inevitable that the transport sector will continue to impose large and growing costs on human health and the environment.

This BMA report serves to highlight the many ways in which transport policy affects health, considering not the more obvious effects such as accidents and pollution but also other consequences of transport policy such as the decline of public transport services, particularly in rural areas, the lowering of the quality of life of inner-city residents and the associated lack of physical activity leading to unhealthy lifestyles.

As well as making recommendations and suggesting some possible solutions, this report aims to promote a broader debate of transport policy and health, which will highlight to the medical profession, public and government the many adverse effects that certain transport policies may have on our health and environment.

This report will be of interest to all member of the public and is essential reading for students, policy makers, town planners, environmental health experts, doctors and other health care professionals.

Bicycle Urbanism - Reimagining Bicycle Friendly Cities (Hardcover): Rachel Berney Bicycle Urbanism - Reimagining Bicycle Friendly Cities (Hardcover)
Rachel Berney
R4,161 Discovery Miles 41 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over recent decades, bicycling has received renewed interest as a means of improving transportation through crowded cities, improving personal health, and reducing environmental impacts associated with travel. Much of the discussion surrounding cycling has focused on bicycle facility design-how to best repurpose road infrastructure to accommodate bicycling. While part of the discussion has touched on culture, such as how to make bicycling a larger part of daily life, city design and planning have been sorely missing from consideration. Whilst interdisciplinary in its scope, this book takes a primarily planning approach to examining active transportation, and especially bicycling, in urban areas. The volume examines the land use aspects of the city-not just the streetscape. Illustrated using a range of case studies from the USA, Canada, and Australia, the volume provides a comprehensive overview of key topics of concern around cycling in the city including: imagining the future of bicycle-friendly cities; integrating bicycling into urban planning and design; the effects of bike use on health and environment; policies for developing bicycle infrastructure and programs; best practices in bicycle facility design and implementation; advances in technology, and economic contributions.

A Trucker's Tale - Wit, Wisdom, and True Stories from 60 Years on the Road (Hardcover): Ed Miller A Trucker's Tale - Wit, Wisdom, and True Stories from 60 Years on the Road (Hardcover)
Ed Miller
R404 Discovery Miles 4 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Wit, wisdom, adventure, and revelations from sixty years on the road. They say that only truck drivers experience the true grandeur and landscape of America: the winding mountainsides at sunrise, the first frosts of winter descending on apple orchards, the call of the rising roosters. In A Trucker's Tale, Ed Miller gives an inside look at the allure of the work and the colorful characters who haul our goods on the open road. He shares what it was like to grow up in a boisterous trucking family, his experience as an equipment officer in Vietnam, the wide range of vehicles he's mounted, and the daily trials, tribulations, risks, and exploits that define life as a trucker. Ed's vibrant, no-holds-barred tales are hilarious and heartwarming, sometimes cringeworthy or unbelievable-recollections of heroic feels as well as the "fishing stories" that have stretched and shifted from CB radio to CB radio. Many are the results of what he calls, "just plain stupidity." Others bring to light the small acts of kindness and grand gestures that these Knights of the Highway perform each day, as well as the safety risks and continual danger that these essential workers endure. Together they paint a compelling portrait of one of the most important, but least-known industries, and reveal why Ed, and so many like him, just kept on truckin'.

Transport Project Evaluation - Extending the Social Cost-Benefit Approach (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Elvira Haezendonck Transport Project Evaluation - Extending the Social Cost-Benefit Approach (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Elvira Haezendonck
R2,872 Discovery Miles 28 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book revisits traditional evaluation methods, such as cost-benefit analysis, to try and find a balance between the ever-increasing demand for transport, the search for sustainable mobility and green transport solutions, and the limited financial resources that governments are able to invest in transport infrastructure projects. In this respect, the effects of transport policy need to be measured and evaluated based on multiple criteria and the need to take into consideration a larger group of stakeholders and investors in transport projects. The book illustrates, methodologically and empirically, why and how the institutional and multi-actor environment impacts upon the analysis, evaluation and decision-making of transport projects in Europe. Including contributions from scholars with considerable expertise in the field, this book will be of great interest to consultants, policymakers and researchers.

From Moorlands to Highlands - A History of Harris & Miners and Brian Harris Transport (Paperback, 3 Revised Edition): John Corah From Moorlands to Highlands - A History of Harris & Miners and Brian Harris Transport (Paperback, 3 Revised Edition)
John Corah
R742 R509 Discovery Miles 5 090 Save R233 (31%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book follows the history and development of Brian Harris Transport Limited, the original red, green, and yellow liveried lorries that made the trek between Devon and Scotland at regular intervals for over fifty years. In 1946, Brian's father, Jerry, and Sam Miners formed Harris & Miners; with their fleet of two Ford trucks and one Commertipper, these two men took on the ultimate haulage challenge of the time: road vs. train. The outcome was that Harris & Miners were offered a contract to haul 'Devon Grate' Candy fire surrounds to Glasgow in 1947. Young Brian Harris began driving for his father in an Albion Chieftain in 1960. When Jerry Harris passed, Brian bought out the Miners family and the company became Brian Harris Transport Limited. With his fleet of ERF lorries fitted with Gardner engines, Brian set about running the company in a way only understood by him. Over the course of its existence, the company utilized a vast quantity of magnificent machines, including the first ERF 'A' series in that area, the Leyland Roadtrain and one Leyland DAF. Brian Harris died in April 2012 and his funeral was attended by over 600 people from all over the UK. This new edition gives an update to the events that have taken place since the second edition was published in 2007, including the eulogy given by the author at the funeral, as well as 82 previously unpublished photographs. Sir Henry Royce - Establishing Rolls-Royce, from Motor Cars to Aero Engines (Paperback): Peter Reese Sir Henry Royce - Establishing Rolls-Royce, from Motor Cars to Aero Engines (Paperback)
Peter Reese
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It's hard to imagine a history of British engineering without Rolls-Royce: there would be no Silver Ghost, no Merlin for the Spitfire, no Alcock and Brown. Rolls-Royce is one of the most recognisable brands in the world. But what of the man who designed them? The youngest of five children, Frederick Henry Royce was born into almost Dickensian circumstances: the family business failed by the time he was 4, his father died in a Greenwich poorhouse when he was 9, and he only managed two fragmented years of formal schooling. But he made all of it count. In Sir Henry Royce: Establishing Rolls-Royce, from Motor Cars to Aero Engines, acclaimed aeronautical historian Peter Reese explores the life of an almost forgotten genius, from his humble beginnings to his greatest achievements. Impeccably researched and featuring almost 100 illustrations, this is the remarkable story of British success on a global stage.

Highway Heist - America's Crumbling Infrastructure and the Road Forward (Hardcover): James T Bennett Highway Heist - America's Crumbling Infrastructure and the Road Forward (Hardcover)
James T Bennett
R766 Discovery Miles 7 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this eye-opening book, Professor James Bennett guides readers through centuries of one of the most underrated yet widely used aspects of American life-roads. Relying on history and economic data-and with a humorous and oftentimes sharp tongue-Bennett explains how important America's highways and byways have been to everything from policymaking to everyday life. Crafting America's roads took persuasion, planning-and more taxes than any politician could have dreamed of. And far too often their realization, thanks, in Bennett's view, to flawed interpretations of the power of eminent domain, required destruction, sometimes on a massive scale, of long-established neighborhoods and important cityscapes. Likewise, the upkeep of America's highways has been the center of many a policy battle, waged by Republicans and Democrats alike. Yes, we all want roads in good working condition-but just how and who will pay for them remain contentious questions. Bennett argues persuasively that the road forward just might be a second, but more serious, sustained look at, and local experimentation with, private roads and toll roads. Agree or disagree with him, Bennett has written a significant contribution to America's ongoing debate about how her citizens should traverse, from "sea to shining sea," its fruited plain.

Michael K. Bess

In Routes of Compromise Michael K. Bess studies the social, economic, and political implications of road building and state formation in Mexico through a comparative analysis of Nuevo Leon and Veracruz from the 1920s to the 1950s. He examines how both foreign and domestic actors, working at local, national, and transnational levels, helped determine how Mexico would build and finance its roadways. While Veracruz offered a radical model for regional construction that empowered agrarian communities, national consensus would solidify around policies championed by Nuevo Leon's political and commercial elites. Bess shows that no single political figure or central agency dominated the process of determining Mexico's road-building policies. Instead, provincial road-building efforts highlight the contingent nature of power and state formation in midcentury Mexico.
