Reeds Sea Transport - Operation and Economics (Paperback, 6th edition): Patrick M. Alderton Reeds Sea Transport - Operation and Economics (Paperback, 6th edition)
Patrick M. Alderton
R484 Discovery Miles 4 840 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

The bible on operation and economics within the maritime transport industry, covering types of ship, issues related to crew, cargo and ports, and examining changes in the industry. This book gives a complete picture of the Maritime Transport Industry so that those involved with shipping can see their own specific field of interest in perspective and understand how the basic model of this mode of transport operates. The sixth edition of Reeds Sea Transport has been updated throughout to take account of changes in the industry. It includes new data and statistics, new advice on safety, a review of ship types including the growth in tonnage and the increase in container ship sizes, as well as the effect of the 'depression' over recent years, all of which make essential reading for professionals as well as students on courses concerned with Shipping Ports and Transport. Modern transport professionals must be able to adapt to and anticipate the implications of changes in their industry; this book gives an insight into how management has coped with change over the last century, and enables the reader to see how this essential commercial activity has developed. 'It is a book that should be owned and read by everyone who makes his or her living from the shipping industry' Ships and Ports

A History Of The World In Twelve Shipwrecks (Paperback): David Gibbins A History Of The World In Twelve Shipwrecks (Paperback)
David Gibbins
R586 R476 Discovery Miles 4 760 Save R110 (19%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A history of the world through 12 shipwrecks, from ancient Rome to WW2, by world renowned underwater archaeologist David Gibbins.

From a Bronze Age ship built during the age of Queen Nefertiti and filled with ancient treasures, a Viking warship made for King Cnut himself, Henry VIII's spectacular Mary Rose and the golden age of the Tudor court, to the exploration of the Arctic, the tragic story of HMS Terror and tales of bravery and endurance aboard HMS Gairsoppa in World War Two, these are the stories of some of the greatest underwater discoveries of all time. A rich and exciting narrative, this is not just the story of those ships and the people who sailed on them, the cargo and treasure they carried and their tragic fate. This is also the story of the spread of people, religion and ideas around the world, a story of colonialism and migration which continues today.

Drawing on decades of experience excavating shipwrecks around the world, renowned maritime archaeologist David Gibbins reveals the riches beneath the waves and shows us how the treasures found there can be a porthole to the past to tell a new story about the world and its underwater secrets.

Transportation After Deregulation, Volume 6 (Hardcover, 1st ed): B. Starr McMullen Transportation After Deregulation, Volume 6 (Hardcover, 1st ed)
B. Starr McMullen
R2,859 Discovery Miles 28 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Several of the papers in this volume are concerned with assessing both the timing and the impacts of deregulation and regulatory reform in the US transportation sector. Of increasing interest is the importance of productivity growth and the role played by new technologies in a more competitive market environment. Four of the papers in this volume deal directly with these issues in the context of motor carriers and railroads, two sectors which have been operating under substantially reduced regulatory constraints for the past twenty years in the US. Although the financial condition of US railroads has improved since 1980, there is still some concern regarding their long run viability as private enterprises. Accordingly, one of the papers considers the potential for further reductions in railroad costs through transcontinental mergers, a controversial issue due to the small number of railroads that remain in the industry.

Ramsgate Municipal Airport - A Pictorial History (Paperback): Anthony John Moor Ramsgate Municipal Airport - A Pictorial History (Paperback)
Anthony John Moor
R512 R466 Discovery Miles 4 660 Save R46 (9%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The RFC used the Ramsgate site for emergency landings during December 1914, but it was not developed until the 1930s when Ramsgate councillors proposed an airport be established, and flying commenced in June 1935. Popularity was increased by Sir Alan Cobham's National Aviation Day which was held on 1 August 1935, and a Flying Flea Rally took place in 1936. Crilly and Hillman Airways moved in, but suspended services very soon afterwards. The airfield was extended in 1936, and Flying Holidays took place. On 3 July 1937, Ramsgate Airport Ltd reopened the airport, and the following year the Royal Auxiliary Air Force held summer camps there. Thanet Aero Club joined the Civil Air Guard scheme, and Southern Airways operated a service across the Thames Estuary during the summer, but this all came to a close when war was declared on 3 September 1939. The airfield reopened in 1940 for military use and during the Battle of Britain, Ramsgate, along with nearby RAF Manston, was bombed on 24 August 1940. Following this, and with invasion fears at their height, the airport was obstructed, not reopening until 27 June 1953. Air Kruise Ltd operated on a lease from Ramsgate Cooperation, flying to Europe, and Skyphotos and Skyflights 1950s took over until the summer of 1958. Chrisair started joyriding in 1960, and following their departure in 1963 little happened until East Kent Air Services formed in 1967, but they were not commercially successful and Ramsgate Airport finally closed during 1968. Developers took over and the Art Deco Terminal/Clubhouse was demolished. This book is witness to Ramsgate Airport, now sadly gone.

Kenneth Button
R1,765 Discovery Miles 17 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Transport Economics is a revised and refined fourth edition of a well-established textbook which applies economic analysis to transport issues. Each chapter has been carefully reworked and includes new material dealing with the regulation of transport markets. To assist in pedagogy, twenty or so free standing 'Exhibits' now provide a variety of case studies and narratives to supplement the text. More up-to-date examples and illustrations also make the understanding of economic principles easier and assist in the assimilation of economic concepts. The theoretical content is supported with considerable empirical evidence drawn from a wide range of international sources. Although aimed primarily at university students, this volume is accessible to non-specialists who have an interest in transport economics. It has no modal bias but rather examines in general terms the many aspects of the demand for, and supply of, transport together with the various methods of government intervention needed to ensure that social and environmental criteria are attained. This successful and widely adopted textbook has been meticulously revised and updated for the fourth edition. As the best intermediate text currently available, it will be welcomed by students, policymakers and all those concerned with the supply of transport services.

R591 R532 Discovery Miles 5 320 Save R59 (10%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The book takes an in-depth look at the East Coast Main Line-King's Cross to Edinburgh-between 1939 and 1959. This is carried out in a series of chapters. In the first one a picture is painted of the state of the network in the late 1930s. It is followed by an account of the historical context of the changes on the ECML over the subject years. This includes wartime 1939-1945 and the fortunes of British Railways in the post-war period until the end of the 1950s; then follows an account of passenger services on the ECML in the summer of 1939 and in the war and changes thereafter. Towards the end of the book there are smaller chapters of specific interest. Amongst these are military and other government installations served by the ECML during WWII; specific wartime locomotive workings; the impact of war on the ECML at various locations along the line; accidents on the ECML September-December 1959 and snow and floods on the ECML in the 1940s and 1950s. The period covered is a crucial one in the history of the line and it is presented in an erudite yet readable manner.
