Constraint-Handling in Evolutionary Optimization (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Efren Mezura-Montes Constraint-Handling in Evolutionary Optimization (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Efren Mezura-Montes
R3,189 Discovery Miles 31 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs), as well as other bio-inspired heuristics, are widely usedto solvenumericaloptimizationproblems. However, intheir or- inal versions, they are limited to unconstrained search spaces i.e they do not include a mechanism to incorporate feasibility information into the ?tness function. On the other hand, real-world problems usually have constraints in their models. Therefore, a considerable amount of research has been d- icated to design and implement constraint-handling techniques. The use of (exterior) penalty functions is one of the most popular methods to deal with constrained search spaces when using EAs. However, other alternative me- ods have been proposed such as: special encodings and operators, decoders, the use of multiobjective concepts, among others. An e?cient and adequate constraint-handling technique is a key element in the design of competitive evolutionary algorithms to solve complex op- mization problems. In this way, this subject deserves special research e?orts. After asuccessfulspecialsessiononconstraint-handlingtechniquesusedin evolutionary algorithms within the Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) in 2007, and motivated by the kind invitation made by Dr. Janusz Kacprzyk, I decided to edit a book, with the aim of putting together recent studies on constrained numerical optimization using evolutionary algorithms and other bio-inspired approaches. The intended audience for this book comprises graduate students, prac- tionersandresearchersinterestedonalternativetechniquestosolvenumerical optimization problems in presence of constraints

Case-Based Reasoning in Design (Hardcover): Mary Lou Maher, M. Bala Balachandran, Dong Mei Zhang Case-Based Reasoning in Design (Hardcover)
Mary Lou Maher, M. Bala Balachandran, Dong Mei Zhang
R4,572 Discovery Miles 45 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Case-based reasoning in design is becoming an important approach to computer-support for design as well as an important component in understanding the design process. Design has become a major focus for problem solving paradigms due to its complexity and open-ended nature. This book presents a clear description of how case-based reasoning can be applied to design problems, including the representation of design cases, indexing and retrieving design cases, and the range of paradigms for adapting design cases. With a focus on design, this book differs from others that provide a generalist view of case-based reasoning.
This volume provides two important contributions to the area:
* a general description of the issues and alternatives in applying case-based reasoning to design, and
* a description of specific implementations of case-based design.
Through this combination, the reader will learn about both the general issues and the practical problems in supporting design through case-based reasoning. This book was prepared to fill a gap in the literature on the unique problems that design introduces to computational paradigms developed in computer science. It also addresses the needs of computational support for design problem solving from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

A High-Rate Virtual Instrument of Marine Vehicle Motions for Underwater Navigation and Ocean Remote Sensing (Hardcover, 2013... A High-Rate Virtual Instrument of Marine Vehicle Motions for Underwater Navigation and Ocean Remote Sensing (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Chrystel Gelin
R2,998 Discovery Miles 29 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dead-Reckoning aided with Doppler velocity measurement has been the most common method for underwater navigation for small vehicles. Unfortunately DR requires frequent position recalibrations and underwater vehicle navigation systems are limited to periodic position update when they surface. Finally standard Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers are unable to provide the rate or precision required when used on a small vessel. To overcome this, a low cost high rate motion measurement system for an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) with underwater and oceanographic purposes is proposed. The proposed onboard system for the USV consists of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with accelerometers and rate gyros, a GPS receiver, a flux-gate compass, a roll and tilt sensor and an ADCP. Interfacing all the sensors proved rather challenging because of their different characteristics. The proposed data fusion technique integrates the sensors and develops an embeddable software package, using real time data fusion methods, for a USV to aid in navigation and control as well as controlling an onboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). While ADCPs non-intrusively measure water flow, the vessel motion needs to be removed to analyze the data and the system developed provides the motion measurements and processing to accomplish this task.

Slope Stochastic Dynamics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Yu Huang, Min Xiong, Liuyuan Zhao Slope Stochastic Dynamics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Yu Huang, Min Xiong, Liuyuan Zhao
R3,965 Discovery Miles 39 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a new framework for analysis of slope nonlinear stochastic seismic dynamic response based on the new theoretical tool of stochastic dynamics. The coupling effects of uncertainty of geological parameters, strong dynamic nonlinearity, and randomness of ground motion are considered in the process of the seismic dynamic stability assessment of slope. In this book, an intensity frequency non-stationary stochastic ground motion model based on time-domain stochastic process description is preliminarily established to characterize the randomness of earthquakes. The spatial distribution random field model of geotechnical parameters is established to describe the time-space variability of geotechnical parameters. Based on the basic theory of stochastic dynamics, the seismic stability performance evaluation method of slope is established. The slope seismic dynamic model test based on large complex shaking table is performed to verify and modify the proposed framework and method. This book sheds new light on the development of nonlinear seismic stochastic dynamics and seismic design of slope engineering.

Cognitive Systems Engineering for User-computer Interface Design, Prototyping, and Evaluation (Hardcover): Stephen J Andriole,... Cognitive Systems Engineering for User-computer Interface Design, Prototyping, and Evaluation (Hardcover)
Stephen J Andriole, Leonard Adelman
R2,325 Discovery Miles 23 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume seeks to answer the question: "Can findings from cognitive science enhance the user-computer interaction process?" In so doing, it recognizes that user-computer interfaces (UCIs) are often essential parts of an information or decision support system -- and often critical components of software-intensive systems of all kinds. From the outset, the authors note that the design, prototyping, and evaluation of user-computer interfaces are part of larger systems and are therefore ideally designed, developed, and evaluated as part of a larger design and developmental process or "life cycle."
Thus, this book describes the process by which functional, nonfunctional, or display-oriented requirements are converted first into prototypes and then into working systems. While the process may at times seem almost mysterious, there is in fact a methodology that drives the process -- a methodology that is defined in terms of an adaptive life cycle. There are a number of steps or phases that comprise the standard life cycle, as well as methods, tools and techniques that permit each step to be taken. Describing the effort to implement this process to enhance user-computer interaction, this book presents a methodological approach that seeks to identify and apply findings from cognitive science to the design, prototyping, and evaluation of user-computer interfaces.

Principles of Innovative Design Thinking - Synergy of Extenics with Axiomatic Design Theory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Wenjuan... Principles of Innovative Design Thinking - Synergy of Extenics with Axiomatic Design Theory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Wenjuan Li, Zhenghe Song, C. Steve Suh
R4,665 Discovery Miles 46 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book presents a comprehensive treatment on a novel design theory that fosters innovative thinking and creativity essential for addressing wicked problems. Wicked problems are ill-defined, ambiguous in both aims and solutions, and complex with interconnected and intertwined (coupled) factors. While being ubiquitous and difficult, however, wicked problems share characteristics common to science and design in three regards, namely agent finitude, system complexity, and problem normativity. These fundamental attributes allow a core cognitive process common to design and science to be identified and a strategic problem-solving conception of methodology be formulated as a result. The theory facilitates new opportunities for synergetic cross-disciplinary research and practice by incorporating the essences of Extenics to axiomatic design. Innovative thinking is enabled by exploring Extenics for problem reframing, paradigm shift, and abductive reasoning and by engaging axiomatic design in the co-evolution (iteration) of the need and viable design concept. The theory is unique in that it is a framework for quantifying imprecise and vague design information available during the conceptual design stage as mathematical expression and algorithm early in the design effort and enables the objective evaluation and emergence of an optimal design concept from among multitude of viable ones. The book is conceived for students and real-world practitioners in engineering, natural and social sciences, business, and fine arts who seek to develop powerful design thinking for solving problems in a creative and innovative way.

Reliability and Robustness of Engineering Software II - Proceedings of the Second International Conference held in Milan,... Reliability and Robustness of Engineering Software II - Proceedings of the Second International Conference held in Milan, Italy, during 22-24 April 1991 (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
C.A. Brebbia, A.J. Ferrante
R1,662 Discovery Miles 16 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Software for engineering applications has become, during the last few years, a multi-billion pound industry as applications of computer programs are now an essential part of any engineering project. In spite of this, engineer ing software is not always reliable and many fail to produce good solutions. The extent of this problem, which is very costly to the engineering industry, and its consequences, are somewhat hidden because the software industry has not reached the necessary maturity. An engineer needs a long training before being able to design a body for instance. However, to do that, he may use a computer program which has undergone no validation whatsoever and is written by someone without any engineering knowledge. It is imperative to address this problem to ensure that computer codes are properly prepared to provide good solutions, and that they are robust and reliable. This 2nd International Conference on Reliability and Robustness of En gineering Software (RRES 91) was called to address this problem. The meeting was held in Milan, Italy, in April 1991 and was of importance to engineers working in industry who are actively involved with the develop ment of computer codes.

Jean-Louis Batoz, Patrick Chedmail, Gerard Cognet, Clement Fortin
R6,288 Discovery Miles 62 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is devoted to the optimization of product design and manufacturing. It contains selected and carefully composed articles based on presentations given at the IDMME conference, held in CompiA]gne University of Technology, France, in 1998. The authors are all involved in cutting-edge research in their respective fields of specialization. The integration of manufacturing constraints and their optimization in the design process is becoming more and more widespread in the development of mechanical products or systems. There is a clear industrial need for these kinds of methodologies. Important - but still unsolved - problems are related to the definition of design processes, the choice of optimal manufacturing processes, and their integration through coherent methodologies in adapted environments. The main topics addressed in this book are: analysis and optimization of mechanical parts and products (computational structural mechanics, optimum design of structures, finite element solvers, computer-aided geometry, modeling and synthesis of mechanisms); analysis and optimization for fabrication and manufacturing systems (modeling of forming processes, modeling for control and measurement, tolerancing and assembly in manufacturing, off-line programming and optimal parameters for machining, robotics, welding); methodological aspects of integrated design and manufacturing (new methodologies for design with constraints, communication tools, training applications, computer-aided manufacturing). Apart from giving a thorough theoretical background, a very important theme is the relation between research and industrial applications. The book is of interest for engineers, researchers and PhDstudents who are involved in the optimization of design and manufacturing processes.

Design Computing and Cognition '12 (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): John S. Gero Design Computing and Cognition '12 (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
John S. Gero
R6,032 Discovery Miles 60 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Design thinking, the label given to the acts of designing, has become a paradigmatic view that has transcended the discipline of design and is now widely used in business and elsewhere. As a consequence there is an increasing interest in design research. This is because of the realization that design is part of the wealth creation of a nation and needs to be better understood and taught. The continuing globalization of industry and trade has required nations to re-examine where their core contributions lie if not in production efficiency. Design is a precursor to manufacturing for physical objects and is the precursor to implementation for virtual objects. At the same time, the need for sustainable developmentrequires the design of new products and processes, which feeds a movement towards design innovations and inventions.

The papers in this volume are from the" "Fifth International Conference on Design Computing and Cognition (DCC 12) held at Texas A & M University, USA. They represent the state-of-the-art of research and development in design computing and design cognition. They are of particular interest to researchers, developers and users of advanced computation in design and those who need to gain a better understanding of designing."
