Heroes & Heroines of Clarinettistry contains a representative selection of articles written over a 40-year period by Pamela Weston, well-known as an authority in all aspects relating to the clarinet, especially its performers and the composers who wrote for them. Further subjects include the following: clarinettists of the French Revolution (including a map of Paris showing where they lived), Russia's clarinet dynasty, early 19th-century female performers, the great Finnish clarinettist Crussell whose diary tells of French Revolution events and a Napoleonic military parade, Verdi's clarinettist Cavallini who played for and was on familiar terms with the Tsar, the full stories of Stanford's concerto (it was Pamela Weston who got this beautiful work published for the first time, fifty years after the composer's death) and Ireland's Fantasy-Sonata (how the composer worked with the Sonata's dedicatee, Frederick Thurston). These articles were originally published in the following journals: The Clarinet (U.S.A.), National Association of College Wind & Percussion Instructors (U.S.A.), Clarinet & Saxophone (U.K.), Musical Times (U.K.), Music & Musicians (U.K.), Music Teacher (U.K.).

It also examines the social, economic and cultural developments which altered the status, role and perception of the piper in society, and their eventual decline. Focusing on one of the legendary musicians in jazz, this book examines Miles Davis's often overlooked music of the mid-1960s with a close examination of the evolution of a new style: post bop. Jeremy Yudkin traces Davis's life and work during a period when the trumpeter was struggling with personal and musical challenges only to emerge once again as the artistic leader of his generation. A major force in post-war American jazz, Miles Davis was a pioneer of cool jazz, hard bop, and modal jazz in a variety of small group formats. The formation in the mid-1960s of the Second Quintet with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams was vital to the invention of the new post bop style. Yudkin illustrates and precisely defines this style with an analysis of the 1966 classic Miles Smiles.
