A revised handbook about the design and detail of the space between buildings - paths, walls, fences, gates and steps exploring the reason behind much of the best design in both traditional and contemporary landscape architecture. The book includes the use of new materials and methods of construction, and the change from imperial to metric measurement. It does not try to tell the reader what to do but rather how to do it. The topics it covers are from the holistic position of a designer and answer simplified technological questions. It opens each of its sections with a discussion of broader issues and from there it is able to establish the principles which, in varying weights of combination will condition each specific design context. Only then are the potentials of different technological approaches introduced and the way in which technology may further constrain the designer, discussed. It has three main sections covering the horizontal, vertical and constructional principles associated with changes of level.
