The handbook of trauma provides much-needed surgical guidelines for rural doctors in southern Africa and other developing nations, where many doctors are young or newly-qualified, exposed to severe cases of trauma and entrusted early in their careers with high levels of responsibility which they are required to exercise often independently. In developed countries trauma is far less significant.
