Received too late for a full review, Bradford's newest romantic
suspense yarn (Her Own Rules, 1996, etc. etc.) begins during one
Thanksgiving in Connecticut and ends, some months later, in the
Grill Room of the Dorchester Hotel in London. Center-stage,
betweentimes, is the title's woman of power: the late-40ish,
super-rich (thanks to her British in-laws' silversmith business)
Stevie Jardine - married at 16, widowed at 23, and now with three
grown children, one of whom may be a good deal more devious than
anyone (most especially his mother) ever knew. By the close,
though, Stevie will have gone from a "sense of foreboding" to
finding (no surprise) love and forgiveness all around. For
Bradford's devoted fans, which by now number in the millions.
(Kirkus Reviews)
At forty-seven, Stevie Jardine is at the apex of her career and her life, running the American branch of Jardine's, the prestigious Crown Jewellers of London. Having come to terms with her long widowhood, Stevie now draws emotional strength and contentment from her work and her family. Then an unexpected act of violence committed by a stranger on the other side of the world plunges her into turmoil and despair.
In order to save her daughter's life, Stevie must go back to her own past and confront a relationship which has only ever brought her heartbreak. In the struggle that follows, Stevie comes to understand how fragile life really is, and how it can be ineluctably changed by others when we least expect it.
"Few novelists are as consummate as Barbara Taylor Bradford at keeping the reader turning the page. She is one of the world's best at spinning yarns"
