This book is concerned with aspects of the revival of English
military, ecclesiastical and intellectual strength in the period
from King Alfred's defeat of the Great Danish Army at Edington in
878 to the triumph of Benedictinism in the reign of Edgar. Studying
the intellectual development of the first half of the 10th century,
Dr Dumville argues that those decades were a period of continuation
of the Alfredian Renaissance. Dumville explores the difficulties of
Alfred's reign and shows how the efforts undertaken to overcome
them formed the basis for a culture and poltical structure that
achieved a maturity under his 10th-century successors.
