This book is for students, teachers, healthcare workers that come
into contact with children on a daily basis, social workers,
parents, and individuals who want to know more about children
developmental processes and how biological, physical,
socio-economic, emotional, genetics, environmental, cultural,
traditional, and ill health affect the smooth growth and
development of children in different geographical areas and
backgrounds. The Author elaborated on relevant theories of child
development by some renowned pioneers in the game and touched on
how family impact on children in the journey of growth and
subsequent development. There is some relative reiteration on
effects of abuse and neglect as a worrying concern of child
development. The National Service Framework has been explained to
highlight the support the Government renders to its citizens in
order to give them maximum and effectual support, protection and
treatment of children in hospitals. It goes on to explain about the

Depression. This is because a healthy mother with no illness and

Post Natal Depression with some information for mothers in the

all individuasl to have some insight into Post Natal Depression and
how it affects child development. The Author begins with the
Embryonic stage to 5years. This is when the zygote forms after
conception and life begins almost immediately. The unborn Foetus
develop through the trimester stages of pregnancy and is ready to
be born into this world of uncertainties and unpredictability.
Categories of development takes us through socio-emotional
development, through language development with cognitive
development as a central tool for growth and understanding of the
world. Taking care of infants have been explained from feeding,
through rest and sleep, bathing, suitable clothing and
immunization. Behavioural issues has also been highlighted to
balance the growth and developmental aspect. Psychoanalytic
Theories by Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson, Cognitive Theory by
Jean Piaget, Behavioural Theory by B.F. Skinner, Social theory by
John Bowlby, Albert Bandura and Lev Vygotsky. Stages of Cognitive
development has been explained taken into account, Sensorimotor
stage and Object Permanence. Personality has been explained in
