This is the story of Ursula, 19 years old, morphine-addicted,
bisexual and caught between two worlds: the rural French village in
which she lives out a bohemian rhapsody with tortured artist
Vincent Van Gogh and modern-day New York, into which she falls
after slipping through a fissure in time. Mysterious, free-spirited
and eager for experience, Ursula quickly adjusts to modern life,
art and drugs in the East Village, metamorphosing into a militant
feminist with a crew-cut and nose-ring before slipping back through
time to be reunited with her lover at the point of his suicide.
Clever, literate and sensual, the novel can be read as an
imaginative love story, a comment on the creeping decadence of two
fin-de-siecle societies or as a brave attempt to personify the
passion and originality of Van Gogh's paintings. (Kirkus UK)
