The Devil's Own (DVD)

This offering proves that Brad Pitt really can act; he's not just a pretty face! In this action thriller, he co-stars, as an Irishman, with Harrison Ford... and his brogue is most convincing indeed.

In 1972, eight-year-old Francis Austin McGuire (played by Shane Dunne) lives in Northern Ireland with his father, mother and sister. One night, his father (Martin Dunne), a Republican sympathiser, is gunned down in front of him at the dinner table by a masked gunman. Twenty years later, young Irish terrorist "Frankie" McGuire (now played by Brad Pitt) makes the trip to America, where he is to collect a boatload of surface-to-air missiles required by the IRA, and bring them back to Ireland. He arrives in New York, where he assumes the name of Rory Devany. As such, he comes to stay with Tom O'Meara (Harrison Ford) and his family. Tom just happens to be a New York policeman... and hasn't a clue as to who his house guest really is.

The story is a good and fast-paced one... and takes some ironical twists before the end credits roll. This was to be Alan J Pakula's last movie - a fitting tribute to a director who had served the movie industry with such distinction.

When New York cop, Tom O'Meara, agrees to open his family home to Rory Devaney, he doesn't know that he is about to shelter a dangerous and wanted terrorist.

Accepted into Tom's family, Rory discovers a tranquility that he has never previously experienced.

But Rory's terrorist mission is calling - and when he finally has to answer, it is Tom who must hunt him down... and who becomes Rory's sole chance of getting out alive.
