Jarhead (DVD)

WELCOME TO THE SUCK!

Directed by Sam Mendes – Oscar winner for American Beauty in 1999 – this is a contemporary war picture dealing with the US Marines’ desert action in the Gulf War in 2003.

There are three main characters. Firstly, there is the philosophical son of a shellshocked Viet Nam war veteran, Peter Swafford (“What kind of name is that?” he is asked), played by Jake Gyllenhall. Then there is Troy (Peter Sarsgaard), who joins the corps illegally in order to try to make something of himself. Finally, we have Staff Sergeant Sykes (Jamie Foxx) – the tough drill NCO, who both trains and subsequently leads the Scout Snipers. “Swaff” becomes a competent sniper, with Troy as his marker, and the story takes us right from the men’s boot camp and via the action (and the boredom) in the Middle East, through to their final triumphant return home and discharge.

While in the desert, the Americans’ main concerns are what their wives and girlfriends could be getting up to in their absence.
