'A Journey throughout Ireland, During the Spring, Summer and Autumn
of 1834', Vol. 1, Part 2, is part of Clachan's 'Local Histories'
series. It is part of an account of Inglis' journey from Cork to
Kerry, Clare, The Shannon, Limerick and Athlone. His mission was to
establish if Ireland was an 'improving county'. His observations
are of great interest to family and local historians as they give
an important insight into living standards and the relationship
between the gentry, middlemen and the tenantry, as well as
conditions in the towns he visited. To make this text as accessible
as possible and yet remain faithful to the original, Clachan
editors have edited the text carefully, updating certain disused
symbols, forms of spelling and punctuation. We have also provided
an index and carefully researched footnotes.
