First published in 1913, Outlines of Victorian Literature was
co-authored by Professor Hugh Walker and his wife and was based
upon the former's earlier and larger volume, The Literature of the
Victorian Era. The aim here was to furnish a clearly worded and
accessible introduction to the subject of Victorian literature and
to stimulate interest in the lives of the different writers and
their works. The types of literature examined include novels and
poetry, but also extend to works of biography, criticism, history,
theology, philosophy and even science with a particular focus on
the works of Charles Darwin. This volume will be of value to anyone
wishing to know more about how Victorian literature was received
and understood at the beginning of the twentieth century.
