2013 is the 130th anniversary of the Battle of Shaykan, the
Sudanese people's great victory over their British-led
Egyptian-Ottoman occupiers' army, a victory which was part of the
first modern jihad, which eventually saw The Sudan become the only
African country to win its freedom from colonial oppression by
force of arms alone. 2015 is the 130th anniversary of the Battle of
Abu Klea and the fall of Khartoum. 2018 is the 120th anniversary of
The Sudan's re-conquest by Anglo-Egyptian forces at the Battle of
Omdurman. This swashbuckling novel is set against the backdrop of
these pivotal events, events which share many similarities with
current 'Western' interventions in the Middle-East. A revamping of
the old style frontier yarns - filled with bullets, swords,
bayonets, politics and courage.
