When it was first published in 1927, The Cambridge Book of Lesser
Poets was intended by its compiler, Sir John Collings Squire, to
complement the well-known poetry anthologies of Francis Turner
Palgrave and Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. Squire began the task of
assembling his anthology by deliberately omitting over one hundred
greater poets, giving precedence to Nicholas Breton and John Clare
in the place of Shakespeare and Tennyson. Although some familiar
names such as Thomas Dekker, John Bunyan, Washington Irving, and
Herman Melville appear in the collection, the focus remains on
those who lack prominence in the canon, including many medieval
poets whose identities are unknown. Drawing together a considerable
number of first-rate and undervalued poets, The Cambridge Book of
Lesser Poets is an essential supplement to the traditional
anthologies of English verse of the past.
