Based on the bestselling series of graphic novels by Andy Diggle, this big screen adaptation about a group of wrongly-disgraced Special Forces unit is surprisingly enjoyable. With truckloads of action; a hefty dose of humour; and some very off-the-wall performances from a great cast,
The Losers manages to entertain from start to finish.
After being betrayed and left for dead in South America by a rogue element in the C.I.A., a team of soldiers finds that they don't know who to trust in their quest to get back to the United States. Besides wanting to get home, they also want to find the person responsible for setting them up, and he goes by the name of Max. And wreaking vengeance is then the main reason that they team up with a mysterious woman who also wants to dispose of Max.
From this point on, the movie becomes a rollercoaster ride of thrills and spills as our heroes (or as they call themselves... "losers"), exact a plan to find Max and try to put a stop to his evil plans. This involves many Mission: Impossible-type scenarios which are deftly handled by an able cast. Jason Patric really shines as the elusive Max. His villainous character is extremely evil, in a funny and likable kinda way.
While it is exciting and has a great tone, and even manages to remind one at times of a graphic novel, the movie does however offer almost no originality. The movie it resembles most is The A-Team, so much so that both have climactic action showdowns set in the exact same location: the Los Angeles Harbour. But when comparing the two "near-identical" movies (both deal with a team of disgraced soldiers out to clear their names and save the world), one has to choose The Losers as the much more enjoyable option. It's more action-packed, has a better cast, and the story is not "as" preposterous. Still a great ride though! (3.5 put of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
An explosive tale of betrayal and revenge,
The Losers centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission.
The team - Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar - find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Presumed dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they're joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with her own agenda.
Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.
