1904. This book is only a by-work of the mighty chronicler of the
history of France, the pastille of a period of comparative leisure
and relaxation in a busy life spent at Toulon, the scene of some of
the most thrilling of the events recorded - the pieties and
ecstasies, the temptations and sufferings of poor Charlotte Cadiere
and the villainies of her seducer, the vile hypocrite, Father
Girard. But it is none the less delightful for that reason; in
fact, it seems to reflect the author's brilliant personality, to
express his intimate thoughts and personal views and predilections
more vividly than longer and more labored treatises can do.
