The fictional story of Father Sebastian Mission came about several
months after we took a trip to Tucson Arizona. The hotel brochure
reported that the mission was on the national registry, "an
interesting place to visit." We spent an hour at the mission and
each left with different thoughts and feelings. We found it
interesting that two people can enter into the same experience and
leave with such different views. It is amazing and yet, as
therapists, we know it has to do with past history, inner parts and
body sensations that have been reawakened and triggered by the
external encounter. Marcel: I became angry at the perceived
evidence of cultural violations and indigenous exploitation all in
the name of what is holy. It was Father Sebastian who visited me in
a dream. He came as a wise, caring image that walked amongst the
people with respect until he loved and understood them. I both
enjoyed him and found him to be a healing presence." Tara Goodell
contributed photographs of the San Xavier Mission to our project.
Tara has lived in Tucson for most of her life and has been a
visitor to the Mission since she was a child. Tara's passion for
photography has always centered on her love of capturing the
amazing beauty in nature and people as it appears to her, for all
to see. She currently lives in Tucson with her four children, Ryan,
Sara, Lilly and Nathan, and husband Brian, and is the owner of Tara
Goodall Photography.
