Thomas Goodfellowe MP, Michael Dobbs's maverick politico, returns
for another adventure in which he finds, yet again, that despite
unquashable stirrings of ambition for high office, he cannot be a
team-player on the side of his even more power-hungry, and
certainly more ruthless, party bosses. Dobbs has married a
convincingly cynical insider's view of the byzantine ways of
Westminster power-broking and spin-doctoring to a dramatic plot
involving terrorist-style direct action by a group of disgruntled
ex-sevice personnel, with the charismatically flawed but
fundamentally decent Goodfellowe at the centre. As the terrorist
band wreaks a series of highly imaginative stunts on the capital
and the image-obsessed prime minister fears for his position if
they are not apprehended, Goodfellowe struggles to save the city
and the PM's reputation from a climactic armageddon, while still
finding time to pursue his passionate relationship with his sexy
restaurateur girlfriend and attempt a reconciliation with his
troubled daughter, and still entertain fantasies about exchanging
his backbencher's bicycle for a ministerial limo. A page-turning
read to the cliffhanger ending, with some excellent fun at the
expense of politics and politicians along the way. (Kirkus UK)
