During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), crosses began to appear
to commemorate the fallen killed in violence behind the lines. They
commemorated the those who, according to the rebels’ propaganda,
had given their lives ‘for God and for Spain’ In July 2021 the
Spanish Government finally approved a new ‘bill of democratic
memory’ in which, at last, the Francoist legacy of the monuments
to the fallen is addressed The work follows the path opened by
other works on war memorials, the politics of memory and the social
memory of society in 20th century Europe
