Motorcycle road racing at its highest level attracts a very select
band of participants; undeniably brave and skilful, but well aware
of the hazards involved in pursuing such a career. Looking back to
one hundred years ago, an earlier generation of young men was
prepared to accept that same challenge. However any comparison with
their spindly machines, practically devoid of suspension and
braking systems, to the space-age Moto GP projectiles is quite
