Ordinarily treated only as prefigurations of Schleiermacher, the work of Enlightenment theorists Johann Martin Chladenius, George Friedrich Meier and Friedrich Ast yields valuable unsight into the material theory of interpretation, on which a practical interpretive metholody might be built.
