Though he did not partake in any formal design training and started his
career in fashion as a salesman, Ralph Lauren managed to grow his
necktie business into a billion-dollar empire, and his wares are
forever identified with the sporty and preppy lifestyle. After dropping
out of business school and serving in the Army, Lauren worked for
Brooks Brothers before securing financial backing to open his store,
Polo Ralph Lauren, in 1967 at the age of 28. Within two years, he was
able to open his own boutique within Bloomingdales, and by 1971, he had
a stand-alone store in Beverly Hills. In the following years, the brand
grew considerably, and it now operates as the Ralph Lauren Corporation.
Though “Polo” was dropped from its name, the Polo line remains the
flagship brand of the company, and its clothing offerings span from
sportswear to formalwear and reflect a classic American style tied in
with a rugged, outdoorsy image. The main logo of the company is still a
polo pony with or without a polo player.
More than just clothing falls under the Ralph Lauren brand. Fragrances
for both men and women have become an important part of the line.
Starting in 1978, Ralph Lauren partnered with L’Oreal to launch the
first Ralph Lauren fragrance. The iconic Ralph Lauren cologne, named
Polo, is a sharp, woody fragrance that has become one of the
best-selling and most recognized colognes in history. Their first Ralph
Lauren perfume for women, Lauren, is an equally memorable scent. This
first Ralph Lauren perfume for women gained popularity with its fruity
notes blended with rich exotic florals. Other popular men’s colognes
include the Big Pony series, Sport, Safari, Romance, and Explorer.
Popular women’s perfumes include the Ralph and Romance series, Safari,
Chaps, and Notorious.
