The life insurance industry was one of the most important financial
institutions of the long 19th century, on both sides of the
Atlantic. By the eve of the Great Depression, there existed in
America the equivalent of a policy for every man, woman and child
alive at the time, whilst in Britain the life insurance market grew
steadily from its narrow aristocratic base to encompass all social
classes at home and throughout the empire. The sources in this
edition are collected in three themed volumes.
