Die von einer vollstandig erhaltenen Umfassungsmauer aus dem 12. Jahrhundert umringte Klosteranlage Eberbach geht auf die Ansiedelung von Zisterziensermoenchen im Rheingau zuruck. Durch sie erlangte das Kloster seine Blute, das im Sinne der abgeschiedenen Lebensweise der Zisterzienser als weitgehend unabhangiges Gemeinwesen bestand. Die romanischen Bauten mit teilweise gotischen Umbauten sind heute fur kulturelle Aktivitaten der Allgemeinheit zuganglich.
