This work is a compilation of interviews with 13 film actors, directors, and producers who were all part of the studio system that made Hollywood such a powerful and illustrious city in the era of the 1950s. Each of the celebrities interviewed for this work have made lasting contributions to the film industry, and some of them continue to do so. Leslie Caron, Edward Dmytryk, Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., Jane Greer, Stanley Kramer, Janet Leigh, Joan Leslie, Sheree North, Luise Rainer, Vincent Sherman, George Sidney, Jane Withers, and Fred Zinnemann speak candidly about their work and experiences in Hollywood and share many of their memories. Each interview is followed by a complete filmography for each film that the actor, director, or producer was a part of, giving such information as the production company, year of release, director, producer, screenwriter, editor, composer, running time, and cast for each film.
This synchronic analysis of the longest narrative passage of the Book of Jeremiah uses a specific narratological method to try to resolve some riddles of the text, e.g., the curious narrative sequence of chap. 32, the "chaotic" chronology, and the intention of the report. It focuses on the characters and their relations, especially Jeremiah himself as mediator of God's word - but also other characters. Finally, the chapters 32-45 are determined to be an original narrative unit.
Volume 2 gives an account of the principal methods used in developing a theory of algebraic varieties on n dimensions, and supplies applications of these methods to some of the more important varieties that occur in projective geometry.
This work provides a lucid and rigorous account of the foundations of algebraic geometry. The authors have confined themselves to fundamental concepts and geometrical methods, and do not give detailed developments of geometrical properties but geometrical meaning has been emphasised throughout. Here in this volume, the authors have again confined their attention to varieties defined on a ground field without characteristic. In order to familiarize the reader with the different techniques available to algebraic geometers, they have not confined themselves to one method and on occasion have deliberately used more advanced methods where elementary ones would serve, when by so doing it has been possible to illustrate the power of the more advanced techniques, such as valuation theory. The other two volumes of Hodge and Pedoe's classic work are also available. Together, these books give an insight into algebraic geometry that is unique and unsurpassed.
This work provides a lucid and rigorous account of the foundations of modern algebraic geometry. The authors have confined themselves to fundamental concepts and geometrical methods, and do not give detailed developments of geometrical properties, but geometrical meaning has been emphasised throughout. This first volume is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to pure algebra; the basic notions, the theory of matrices over a non-commutative ground field and a study of algebraic equations. The second part is concerned with the definitions and basic properties of projective space in n dimensions. It concludes with a purely algebraic account of collineations and correlations. The other two volumes of Hodge and Pedoe's classic work are also available. Together, these books give an insight into algebraic geometry that is unique and unsurpassed.
Lucid, well-written introduction to elementary geometry usually included in undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in mathematics. Topics include vector algebra in the plane, circles and coaxal systems, mappings of the Euclidean plane, similitudes, isometries, mappings of the intensive plane, much more. Over 500 exercises. "...lucid and masterly survey."-Math. Gazette.
Given the increasing uncertainty due to catastrophic climate events, terrorist attacks, and economic crises, this book addresses planning for resilience by focusing on sharing knowledge among policy-makers, urban planners, emergency teams and citizens. Chapters look at the nature of contemporary risks, the widespread of resilience thinking and the gap between the theoretical conception and the practices. The book explores how resilience implies a change in planning practices, highlighting the need for flexibility in terms of procedures, and for dynamism in the knowledge systems and learning processes that are the main tools for interaction among different actors and scales. Given its breadth of coverage, the book offers a valuable resource for both academic readers (spatial planners, geographers, social scientists) and practitioners (policymakers, citizens' associations).
This book is essential reading for archaeologists working in the field, as well as conservation scientists, museum curators and students of archaeology. The relationship between archaeology and conservation has long been complex and, at times, challenging. Archaeologists are often seen as interested principally in excavation and research, while conservators are concerned mainly with stabilization and the prevention of deterioration. Yet it is often initial conservation in the field that determines the long-term survival and intelligibility of both moveable artefacts and fixed architectural features. This user-friendly guide to conservation practices on archaeological excavations covers both structures and artefacts, starting from the moment when they are uncovered. Individual chapters discuss excavation and conservation, environmental and soil issues, deterioration, identification and condition assessment, detachment and removal, initial cleaning, coverings and shelters, packing, and documentation. There are also eight appendixes. Geared primarily for professionals engaged in the physical practice of excavation, this book will also interest archaeologists, archaeological conservators, site managers, conservation scientists, museum curators, and students of archaeology and conservation.
