Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are

Whether you are looking for an introduction to the field of tree
balance, a reference work on the multitude of available balance
indices or inspiration for your future research, this book offers
all three. It delves into the significance of tree balance in
phylogenetics and other research domains, where numerous indices
have been introduced over the years. While the variations in
definitions and underlying principles among these indices have long
remained a challenge, this survey addresses the problem by
presenting formal definitions of balance and imbalance indices and
establishing desirable properties. The book is comprehensive
both in the inclusion of a variety of indices and in the
information provided on them: the authors meticulously analyze and
categorize established indices, shedding light on their general,
statistical and combinatorial properties. They reveal that, while
some known balance indices fail to meet the most basic criteria,
certain tree shape statistics from other contexts prove to be
effective balance measures. The collected properties are neatly
presented, numerous new results are established, open research
questions are highlighted, and possible applications are discussed.
Reviewing over twenty (im)balance indices, a wealth of mathematical
insights is provided, accompanied by real-world examples showcasing
the importance of tree balance in diverse research areas. Catering
to researchers, students, mathematicians, and biologists, the book
can be used as a textbook for university seminars, a reference on
tree balance, and as a source of inspiration for future research.
It is accompanied by the free R package 'treebalance', a powerful
tool to further explore and apply the discussed concepts, and a
website allowing quick access to the main information and the
latest developments in the field.
This Open Access volume explores the local-global interactions
between gender, Islam and sexuality in Indonesia, the country with
the world's largest Muslim population. The authors offer a fresh
look at the tensions between the local and the global through a
wide range of cultural expressions and productions, including
fashion, Islamic dating, popular literature, and videos on
YouTube. The book is grouped around three core
themes:Â halal lifestyle, desire and shame, and sexuality,
violence and cultural taboos. In the first, the authors bring new
insights into how local expressions of Islam, gender and sexuality
are negotiated in an increasingly globalised world. They explore
forms of a halal lifestyle that include fashion, cosmetics, and an
Islamic dating app. The contributions on the second theme, which
deal with popular literature, illuminate the realm of emotional
worlds, torn between desire and shame. It reveals how different
discourses about gender roles and mobility in culturally diverse
regions such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, the US, and Indonesia
reinforce protagonists` exclusion and precariousness. The third
section unpacks how cultural taboos, such as speaking openly about
rape, abuse and torture, are handled in Indonesia, speaking to the
Indonesian version of the #MeToo movement. This volume is a
useful resource for postgraduate students, lecturers and
researchers with an interest in gender studies, cultural studies,
and literary studies, particularly in Asian and Islamic country
contexts. “This book will be of great value to scholars and
observers of Indonesia's changing social landscape. The chapters
provide insight both into causes of changes within the
socio-political sphere -- such as new laws criminalising forms of
sexuality -- and into understanding the impact such conservative
changes have on a range of people. The volume is a must-read for
anyone wanting to get up to speed on changes in Indonesia’s
gender, sexuality and Islamic landscape.” -
Professor Sharyn Graham Davies, Director of the Herb
Feith Indonesia Engagement Centre, Monash University,
Australia “A showcase of excellent research, this book is of
appeal to Indonesian studies scholars, and to readers in the field
of Asian cultural studies. It is also of relevance to the field of
Asian gender and sexuality studies, and to scholars in Islamic
studies.” – Professor Pamela Nilan, University of Newcastle,
Australia "The articles in this anthology discuss and analyse a
wide range of gender and sexuality issues in an Indonesia that
lives with the "regulatory zeal" of conservative Islamists.
Significantly, however, various agencies are also considered, as
well as the creative resistance of regulated people and
communities. This book should definitely be on the reading list for
the study of Indonesian gender and sexuality." – Dr
Dede Oetomo, Founder and Trustee of GAYa NUSANTARA Foundation
Senior adult ministry isn't what it used to be. The comfortable
assumptions and outdated programs that were the basis for local
church ministry are being challenged. Baby boomers are hitting
middle age and retirement. And their own parents are living longer.
Authors Win and Charles Arn have updated and supplemented Catch the
Age Wave with ideas, examples and advice to help the local church
leader start and maintain a senior adult program. In addition, they
have added practical program ideas to use in any local church
setting. New challenges for a new day. Catch the Age Wave won't let
you miss the boat.
The sports industry had impressive global growth over the years,
with factors from the introduction of e-sports and new streaming
and viewing methods to sponsorships and digital media contributing
to its rise. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought upon a rapid
change in this sector. Sports' seasons ended abruptly, people's
escape from reality suddenly vanished, their spending attitudes
changed, live games and commercial flights were suspended, hotels
were impossible to book, and consumers practically turned into
prisoners within their own homes. No live sports matches were to
follow on any media either, so specialized sports channels were
forced to play old recordings rather than broadcasting new events.
Even athletes themselves struggle to stay relevant and thus, try to
utilize creative methods to enhance their brand value in these
difficult times. With most of the sports leagues shut down during
the pandemic, with a few exceptions which performed in empty
venues, the restrictions diminished the sports experience compared
to the pre-COVID-19 era and the impacts were widespread. Impacts
and Implications for the Sports Industry in the Post-COVID-19 Era
explores the changes that have been and will continue to be created
by the unexpected disruptions that occurred as a result of the
pandemic within the sports industry, fans consumption, and
recreational habits. The chapters explore the status of sports
after the pandemic, paths to recovery, and the future of sports,
along with the many impacts and issues that have arisen due to
changes in the industry necessitated by COVID-19. Covering
important topics such as mental health, impacts on athletes and
coaches, the market value for professional sports, consumer
behavior during COVID-19, and the changes in marketing, tourism,
and business, this book is ideally intended for sports managers,
marketers, broadcasting agencies, media specialists, brand
managers, fitness professionals, practitioners, stakeholders,
researchers, academicians, and students interested in the impacts
on the sports industry and the outlook for sports in the
post-COVID-19 era.
Arne Gron's reading of Soren Kierkegaard's authorship revolves
around existential challenges of human identity. The 35 essays that
constitute this book are written over three decades and are
characterized by combining careful attention to the augmentative
detail of Kierkegaard's text with a constant focus on issues in
contemporary philosophy. Contrary to many approaches to
Kierkegaard's authorship, Gron does not read Kierkegaard in
opposition to Hegel. The work of the Danish thinker is read as a
critical development of Hegelian phenomenology with particular
attention to existential aspects of human experience. Anxiety and
despair are the primary existential phenomena that Kierkegaard
examines throughout his authorship, and Gron uses these negative
phenomena to argue for the basically ethical aim of Kierkegaard's
work. In Gron's reading, Kierkegaard conceives human selfhood not
merely as relational, but also a process of becoming the self that
one is through the otherness of self-experience, that is, the body,
the world, other people, and God. This book should be of interest
to philosophers, theologians, literary studies scholars, and anyone
with an interest not only in Kierkegaard, but also in human
identity.
If the September 11 terror attacks opened up an era of crises and
exceptions of which we are yet to see the end, it is perhaps not
surprising that care has emerged in the early twenty-first century
as a key political issue. This book approaches contemporary
narratives of care through the lens of a growing body of
theoretical writings on biopolitics. Through close-readings of J.M.
Coetzee's "Slow Man," Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go," Paul
Auster's "The Book of Illusions," and Tom McCarthy's "Remainder,"
it seeks to reframe debates about realism in the novel ranging from
Ian Watt to Zadie Smith as engagements with the novel's
biopolitical origins: its relation to pastoral care, the camps, and
the welfare state. Within such an understanding of the novel, what
possibilities for a critical aesthetics of existence does the
contemporary novel include?
This all-encompassing volume offers a comprehensive look at the
contemporary culture that defines this Southeast Asian country of
Laos, examining everything from Buddhist traditions to Laotian
cuisine. Coverage includes a brief history of the nation followed
by in-depth narrative chapters on religion, literature, visual and
performing arts, fashion, gender roles, everyday social customs,
and more. Through illustrative descriptions of daily life, students

for all library shelves.
The Southeast Asian country of Laos, one of the world's
last-standing communist nations, has often been overshadowed in the
international newsroom by its more dominant neighbors, Thailand,
Vietnam, and Cambodia. Among one of the most bombed countries in
the world, one that suffered much during and after the Vietnam War,
Laos has been struggling economically and politically for decades.
In spite of these challenges, a rich, beautiful culture has
survived in Laos. This exhaustive volume offers a comprehensive
look at the contemporary culture that defines this seemingly quiet
country, from Buddhism to Laotian cuisine. Coverage includes a
brief history of the nation followed by in-depth narrative chapters
on religion, literature, visual and performing arts, fashion,
gender roles, everyday social customs, and more. Through
illustrative descriptions of daily life, students will learn how
traditional customs have shaped contemporary life in Laos today.
Few other resources provide the same extensive coverage on current
culture in Laos. Ideal for high school students as well as general
readers, "Culture and Customs of Laos" is a must-have for all
library shelves.
