Tragedies happen again and again because we fail to learn from the past. The past is rich with valuable lessons – rich pickings. This book examines the variation found in modern spoken French, based on the research programme 'Phonology of Contemporary French' (Phonologie du Francais Contemporain, PFC). Many laws grow out of custom, and one measure of a law's success is by its creation of an enduring legal custom.
