First published in 1918 Whizzbangs and Woodbines presents a candid
portrait of life behind the lines on the Western Front by Reverend
Durell, then Rector of Rotherhithe, and Chief Commissioner of the
Church Army in France. The Church Army, along with its counterparts
the YMCA, TOC-H and Salvation Army played an important part in the
support and morale of soldiers in war. In addition to providing
spiritual support, the Church Army welcomed more than 200,000 men
each day to their recreation huts and provided visits and gifts to
the wounded, tents and hostels near the front lines, drove
ambulances, mobile canteens and kitchen cars.In addition to
voluntary Church services, for those who wished to attend, a simple
salvation from trench life was offered; music, singing, concerts,
card games, billiards and refreshments, all small measures of joy in
the midst of dangers and hardships and as vital to the continued
war effort as bullets and shells. For a packet of woodbines and a
cup of tea was restorative ammunition enough for the average
British Tommy.

Borawski and Young provide a serious analysis of the major
issues confronting European-North American relations. They draw
detailed attention to the fundamental political and military issues
before the Atlantic Alliance.
They illustrate that NATO remains essential to Euro-Atlantic
security. Only the Atlantic Alliance can bring to bear well-tested
military capability under US leadership to promote its members
security, interests, and democratic values. However, to remain
vital, the Alliance must undertake a serious review of its major
purposes: enlargement to the former Warsaw Pact nations, a
strategic partnership with Russia, defense against weapons of mass
destruction, and a more mature transatlantic relationship drawing
on the lessons of the former Yugoslavia. This is an important
assessment for policymakers, military planners, scholars, students,
and others concerned with current European-American relations.
No one can determine what the future holds for them; however, at
any given time one may express how he/she feels at that moment.
Later in life as we mature, some of our values in life change while
others remain the same. Although we all have dreams and
aspirations, we can only work toward achieving them if we continue
to focus on those dreams and aspirations. This work expresses some
old views I had about life and some new views that I have about
life. After careful consideration of my observations about life,
politics, social issues, love, etc., my understanding and maturity
have changed.
However, some things are fundamental. Then it was ""It's Just
The Way I Feel"" and now ""It's Still The Way I Feel.""
This book on the economics of defence industry assesses a series of
historical and contemporary case studies that consistently
demonstrate the need for governments to recognise, and thereafter
factor, the financial needs of a narrow industrial sector that is
capital intensive, technologically advanced, and that requires of a
highly skilled labour force. Since the end of the cold war, Western
governments have systematically reduced financial support to their
domestic defence industry and have seemingly ignored planning and
funding industrial mobilisation. In all cases, government policy
has been to encourage industries to consolidate capacity to become
financially viable in a sector that has seen diminished demand. The
2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused Western governments to
reassess their previous assumptions. Efforts to increase industrial
capacity have been met with the iron laws of economics whereby
businesses needing to show return on investments. The chapters in
this volume posit that efforts to rationalise industrial capacity
and innovation to meet short-term financial efficiencies,
inevitably results in limited, expensive, and long delays in
increased production in times of international crisis. This book
serves as an essential guide for academics, researchers and
students interested in defence economics, industrial economics,
international relations, and industrial policy. The chapters in
this book were originally published in various issues of Defense
& Security Analysis.
Performative Intergenerational Dialogues of a Black Quartet
promotes the importance of intergenerational Black dialogue as a
collaborative spirit-making across race, genders, sexualities, and
cultures to bridge time and space. The authors enter this dialogue
in a crisis moment: a crisis moment at the confluence of a
pandemic, the national political transition of leadership in the
United States, the necessary rise of Black, Indigenous, and People
of Color activism-in the face of the continued murders of unarmed
Black and queer people by police. And as each author mourns the
loss of loved ones who have left us through illness, the contiguity
of time, or murder, we all hold tight to each other and to memory
as an act of keeping them alive in our hearts and actions,
remembrance as an act of resistance so that the circle will be
unbroken. But they also come together in the spirit of hope, the
hope that bleeds the borders between generations of Black
teacher-artist-scholars, the hope that we find in each other's joy
and laughter, and the hope that comes when we hear both stories of
struggle and strife and stories of celebration and smile that lead
to possibilities and potentialities of our collective being and
becoming-as a people. So, the authors offer stories of witness,
resistance, and gettin' ovah, stories that serve as a road map from
Black history and heritage to a Black futurity that is mythic and
imagined but that can also be actualized and embodied, now. This
book will be of interest to scholars, students, and activists in a
wide range of disciplines across the social sciences and
performance studies.

Great power competition has returned to the world stage and the
U.S. Navy finds itself in the forefront of U.S. efforts to
demonstrate national resolve. The U.S. Navy: Case Studies in its
Past, Present, and Future argues that the challenge of determining
the future structure and operation of the fleet can be best
achieved through an examination of its relevant past experience, as
well as from current operations of the navy. After years of
uncertainty as to its purpose and missions, the rise of China and
Russian provocations now require U.S. officials to transform the
fleet and its way of employing it. The contributors to this edition
provide case studies of past, present, and future challenges that
the U.S. Navy has, and will need to overcome as it reconsiders how
it will restructure the fleet and reconsider its prevailing
concepts of operations. Contributors examine past challenges to
structuring the fleet and its prevailing concepts of operation.
Based on this foundation, case studies propose how navy leadership
should consider developing and employing the fleet in future. The
chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue
of Defense & Security Analysis.
Covering the tabletop battery radios built by Zenith, the
Chicago-based manufacturer, each radio is described in detail.
Included are comprehensive functional descriptions on each set's
operation, which uses color-coded diagrams to aid in describing the
circuits. Over 400 color photos and over 200 diagrams illustrate
the thorough text. Each radio section includes a Quick Reference
Guide. Previously unpublished information related to these radios
is included for the first time. The restoration section covers the
reproduction of vital replacement parts (pointers, pulleys, etc.)
that typically need replacing, the repair of other parts (variable
capacitor, transformers, etc.), appropriate modifications (battery
adapter, etc.), and testing in order to get that early radio
working. The techniques presented can be applied to the restoration
of any 1920s radio. Also included are instructions on reproducing
any battery ( A, B, or C ) in radios built in the 1920s. This is an
indispensable reference guide to early Zenith radios."

Although the West won the Cold War, the continuation of the status
quo is not a foregone conclusion. The former Soviet-aligned regions
outside of Russia -- Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, and others --
sit atop decaying armed forces while Russian behavior has grown
more and more aggressive, as evidenced by its intervention in
Ukraine in recent years. Thomas Young delves into the state of
these defense institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, whose
resources have declined at a faster rate than their Western
neighbors' due to social and fiscal circumstances at home and
shifting attitudes in the wider international community. With
rigorous attention to the nuances of each region's politics and
policies, he documents the status of reform of these armed forces
and the role that Western nations have played since the Cold War,
as well as identifying barriers to success and which management
practices have been most effective in both Western and Eastern
capitals. This is essential reading for undergraduates and
graduates studying the recent history of Europe in the post-Soviet
era, as well as those professionally involved in defense governance
in the region.
Originally published in 1906, this book presents a study of 'the
conceptions of the Christian Ecclesia as revealed in Christian
history as a whole'. The period covered extends to the end of the
second century, taking into account the development of various
aspects of the Church and the ministry, and is defined by the text
as the 'sub-apostolic age'. Careful attention is given to a number
of documents from the period and their various points of view.
Textual notes and a detailed index are also provided. This book
will be of value to anyone with an interest in perspectives on the
early history of Christianity.
