Focuses on the effects of natural products and their active components on brain function and neurodegenerative disease prevention. Phytochemicals such as alkaloids, terpenes, flavanoids, isoflavones, saponins etc are known to possess protective activity against many neurological diseases. The molecular mechanisms behind the curative effects rely mainly on the action of phytonutrients on distinct signaling pathways associated with protein folding and neuro-inflammation. The diverse array of bioactive nutrients present in these natural products plays a pivotal role in prevention and cure of various neurodegenerative diseases, disorders, or insults, such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, traumatic brain injury, and other neuronal dysfunctions. However, the use of these antioxidants in the management of neurodegenerative conditions has so far been not well understood. This is a comprehensive collection addressing the effects on the brain of natural products and edible items such as reservatrol, curcumin, gingerol, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and marine products.

Of the many varieties of date palms, the species Phoenix dactylifera Linn. is cultivated extensively and traded and consumed worldwide. Dates: Production, Processing, Food, and Medicinal Values draws from a broad spectrum of contributors to present a comprehensive survey of this particular species. The book explores a range of essential facets of what many consider to be a wonder plant-from its cultivation to its potential for medicinal purposes.

Divided into four parts, the book begins by examining cultural practices and their implications for date quality. The contributors discuss tissue culture studies, farm water management, mechanization approaches in pollination and harvesting operations, and marketing aspects. The second section focuses on postharvest operations such as drying and explores alternatives for methyl bromide fumigation and value-added products. It also reviews biofuel production from by-products and discusses the issue of waste generated from industry.

The third part of the book highlights the physical, chemical, and structural characteristics of dates. It reviews fermentative products that use dates as substrate, discusses the fruits as a substitute for added sugar in food, and explores date palm feeding to livestock. The final section discusses the possibilities for nutritional and medicinal use and reviews the use of dates in indigenous medicine.

Muslims in non-Muslim Lands - A Legal Study with Applications (Hardcover): Amjad M. Mohammed Muslims in non-Muslim Lands - A Legal Study with Applications (Hardcover)
Amjad M. Mohammed
R1,928 Discovery Miles 19 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the Second World War, there has been a significant migration of Muslims to countries in the Western world. Muslims in Non-Muslim Land traces the process by which these migrants arrived in Western Europe - in particular Britain - and explains how the community developed its faith identity through three particular stances: assimilation, isolation and integration. The findings argue that the assumption that Islam causes Muslims to isolate from the indigenous population and form a 'state within a state' is false and that Islamic Law actually gives Muslims confidence and the ability to integrate within the wider society. The theological view that all non-Muslim lands are dar alarb (domain of war) is challenged, and the study shows that the traditional interpretive model of Islamic Law inherently possesses the flexibility and applicability to take into consideration minority-status of Muslims in Britain. Muslims in Non-Muslim Land focuses on Islamic Law as interpreted by the anafi Law school and highlights in detail the multi-pronged and robust nature of its legal theory and subsequent application. What is ground-breaking about Muslims in Non-Muslim Lands is that it illustrates the ability of anafi Law to deal with contemporary issues in a wide range of subjects. It also provides Muslims with ways of Islamically resolving medical, financial and political concerns. The study concludes that Islamic Law can facilitate the integration of Muslim minorities within secular societies while allowing them to still remain true to their faith.

Food and Huntingtons Disease is another book in a series of books related to the benefits of food on brain function. This book designates the possible beneficial effects of edible natural products and their active materials on Huntingtons disease. This is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that could cause uncontrolled movements, cognitive difficulties and emotional disturbances. The aim of this book and its series is to create awareness in general audiences about the dietary perception to reduce the occurrence of Huntingtons disease. This may enable a better understanding and possibly reduce the cost on medical bills for patients (approximately $4500/year/person) and the insurance companies. Literature revealed that this disturbing neurodegenerative disorder has a higher prevalence in Europe (3-7 in 100,000), North America (4-5 in 100,000), and Australia than in Asian countries. Studies suggest that mutation in the HD gene and the repeat expansion play an important role in the pathophysiology of this disease. The genetic defect underlying Huntingtons disease is unstable, caused by an abnormal CAG expansion within the first exon of the Huntingtin gene (HTT), leading to an expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) track in the HTT protein. This disease is an inherited one. Even though the prevalence rate is moderate, scientists predict that a lot of people possess the possibility of carrying this disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress could very highly play a role in this disease. In the last decade, the benefits of food on many diseases including brain diseases were explored. This book aims to summarize the recent updates on the benefit of natural edible materials and their active principles on the prevention or delaying of the progression or the management of this disease. The editors feel highly obligated to all the contributors for this initiative. Undeniably, they believe that the information provided in this book would raise the awareness of the readers and could possibly help them to understand the disease process and the benefits of food items on Huntingtons disease management.

It is well documented that most natural products are enriched with bio-active components that have protective action. There is currently a growing body of evidence that supplementing the human diet with natural products is of major benefit for human health and well-being. Nowadays, the use of complementary/alternative medicine, functional food and especially the consumption of natural products have been increasing rapidly world-wide, mostly because of the supposedly less frequent side effects. Both in conventional and traditional medicines, natural products continue to provide valuable therapeutic agents. The issues regarding the efficacy and safety of currently available modern medicine agents have prompted the search for safer and more effective alternatives. This book focuses on implications of traditional and processed foods for health and disease prevention.
