Academic literature rarely gives an account of the ethical
challenges and emotional pitfalls the researcher is confronted with
before, during and after being in the field. Giving personal
accounts, the authors explore some of the challenges one can face
when engaging in local-level research in difficult situations.
This text examines the development of social democratic parties in
Western Europe and suggests that instead of viewing a single model,
in the past it was more accurate to consider a Northern and
Southern European version. Each model varied in its
characteristics, yet each retained an adherence to the same core
values. But now a "new" version of social democracy is emerging
that is characterized by an advocacy of the tenets of
neo-liberalism.
This book looks at the new militant and radical forms of lobbying and activism and the ways in which companies and organizations can devise strategies to respond or create new communication strategies that will avoid conflict and confrontation. The book draws upon the work of practitioners working in this area and includes topical and relevant international cases and examples.
Originally published in 1968, this book gave a rounded picture of
some of the problems which were facing the Highlands of Scotland in
the first half of the twentieth century. The contributors examined
various aspects of the Highland problem and ways of solving it: how
to develop productive industry, stabilize the population, encourage
creative growth of community and support Gaelic culture and
language. The book takes full account of the historical background,
linguistic, literary and economic situation.

Studies of the influence of the middle ages on aspects of European
and American life and culture from 16c to the present day. The
eleven essays in this volume are studies of specific instances of
the influence and impact of the middle ages on Western life and
culture from the sixteenth century to the present day. They cover a
wide range of topics -literature, stylistics, lexicography, art,
the cinema, philosophy, history and myth-making, oral traditions,
feminist issues - and reflect the enduring influence of the middle
ages on European art and life. Dr MARIE-FRANCOISE ALAMICHEL is
lecturer in English at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne; the
late DEREK BREWER was Emeritus Professor of English, University of
Cambridge. Contributors: CLAIRE VIAL, DERICK S. THOMSON, KEES
DEKKER, ERIC G. STANLEY, FLORENCE BOURGNE, RENATE HAAS, DEREK
BREWER, LAURA KENDRICK, RENE GALLET, JAMES NOBLE, SANDRA
GORGIEVSKI.
Arthur S. Thomson (1816-60) was a Scottish military surgeon and
medical scientist who was posted to New Zealand in the late 1840s.
During his eleven years in the country, settlement increased and
British sovereignty over the colony was extended. Thomson felt that
previous historical accounts of New Zealand all demonstrated a
certain political, colonial or religious bias, and decided to write
his own comprehensive history of the islands, which was published
in 1859. Volume 1 begins with a focus on the geography and climate
of New Zealand. Thomson then describes the physical appearance of
the New Zealanders, their way of life, their culture, their
property laws and the origin of their (now abandoned) cannibalism.
Next he describes the history of discovery and settlement by
Europeans, who brought 'true civilisation' to the islands. Thomson
gives especial credit to the Christian missionaries for having
introduced progress and enlightenment.

discovery and settlement. He justifies the progress of British
colonisation by arguing that it brought civilisation to the native
people, fully supporting the introduction of English (property) law
and the introduction of Christianity. Thomson advocates that the
Maoris be taught English, as this is the only way to give them hope
that they can 'rise above the hewers of wood and drawers of water'.
For this collection, Alton Morris selected 243 folksongs gathered
in the late 1930s from more than a hundred singers in 49 of
Florida's 67 counties. Headnotes identify each song's source and
its historical or social context. Among the distinctions of Morris'
book are the large proportion of texts attached to transcriptions
of the tune to which they were sung and the unusually unbiased
nature of his selection procedure. The result is a collection that
more truly than most reflects the complete singing traditions of a
regional cultural group, in this case Floridians primarily of
Anglo-American extraction.
