This text examines the development of social democratic parties in
Western Europe and suggests that instead of viewing a single model,
in the past it was more accurate to consider a Northern and
Southern European version. Each model varied in its
characteristics, yet each retained an adherence to the same core
values. But now a "new" version of social democracy is emerging
that is characterized by an advocacy of the tenets of
neo-liberalism.
