Timaeus of Tauromenium (350-260 BC) wrote the authoritative work on
the Greeks in the Western Mediterranean and was important through
his research into chronology and his influence on Roman
historiography. Like almost all the Hellenistic historians,
however, his work survives only in fragments. This book provides an
up-to-date study of his work and shows that both the nature of the
evidence and modern assumptions about historical writing in the
Hellenistic period have skewed our treatment and judgement of lost
historians. For Timaeus, much of our evidence is preserved in the
polemical context of Polybius' Book 12. When we move outside that
framework and examine the fragments of Timaeus in their proper
context, we gain a greater appreciation for his method and his
achievement, including his use of polemical invective and his
composition of speeches. This has important implications for our
broader understanding of the major lines of Hellenistic
historiography.
The therapeutic options for the treatment of multiple sclerosis
(MS) and other neurodegenerative and traumatic diseases such as
spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, etc. , have
undergone enormous progress over recent years. Despite these
encouraging developments, available therapies are only partially
effective, and the ultimate goal is still far from being attained.
Improved understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of
the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration and demyelination has led to
a variety of new therapeutic targets and approaches. In addition to
modulation of the in?ammatory process (MS) and cl- sical
neuroprotection (stroke, AD), therapeutic approaches focussing on
active remyelinization and neuronal regeneration have become incre-
ingly important. Based on current concepts, this book summarizes
new therapeutic approaches. Although it was once thought that the
central nervous system (CNS) of mammals was incapable of
substantial recovery from injury, it is now clear that the adult
CNS remains responsive to various substances that can promote cell
survival and stimulate axonal growth. Among these substances are
growth factors, including the neurotrophins and cytokines. Stem
cell therapies for the induction of remyelinization and
neuroregeneration are reviewed. The potential role of a protective
- munity in the induction of remyelination and neuroregeneration is
also discussed. Different gene therapy approaches for the treatment
of MS VI Preface and other neurodegenerative diseases such as
Alzheimer's disease and spinal cord injury, etc. , are also
summarized.

This revised edition includes new chapters on the development of
aggression, biological bases of aggressive behavior, and aggression
in natural settings; and extensive updates of the theory and
research covered in the first edition.
First Published in 2015. Classic and contemporary Marxist
theoretical works on imperialism are systematically summarized and
critiqued in this useful survey. Throughout the discussion,
attention is focused analyses of the causes of capitalist foreign
economic expansion and the impact of that expansion. The study
begins with a discussion of Marx's political economy and the work
of early theorists of imperialism, Vladimir Lenin, Rosa Luxemburg,
Nikolai Bukharin and Rudolf Hilferding. This analysis then serves
as the basis for a critical survey of the major strands of postwar
Marxist thought, including the work of Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy,
Harry Madgdoff, James O'Connor, Andre Gunder Frank and more,
Following the survey ae extended critiques of Baran and Sweezy's
theory of monopoly capitalism and Arghiri Emmanuels' theory of
unequal exchange.

Entrepreneurship is essential for international social and economic
well-being, as new ventures are the dominant source of job
creation, market innovation, and economic growth in many societies.
In this book, a noted group of researchers use findings, methods,
and theories of modern psychology as the basis for gaining
important, new insights into entrepreneurship-and into the hearts
and minds of the talented, passionate professionals who create new
business ventures. The Psychology of Entrepreneurship, a volume in
the SIOP Organizational Frontiers Series, is the first book written
about the psychology of entrepreneurship, and includes over 60
research questions to guide industrial organizational psychology,
organizational behavior, and entrepreneurship research about
entrepreneurs. It seeks to answer questions such as, how and why do
some people, but not others, recognize opportunities, decide to
start new ventures, and organize successful, rapidly growing new
ventures? Some topics addressed include: methods to help
researchers explore the domain of entrepreneurship research; the
entire process of starting a new business; characteristics of the
individual entrepreneur; the history of entrepreneurship education;
the cross-cultural effects of entrepreneurship; and the viewpoints
of seasoned psychologists who analyze current entrepreneurship
research methods. This book will appeal to teachers, students, and
researchers in the areas of industrial organizational psychology,
organizational behavior, entrepreneurship, and management.

strikes a balance between breadth and depth and was written for the
beginning student and others interested in a relatively short text
on radical economics.

also many newer lines of research, to which I will return below,
are represented in various chapters. And finally, I have included a
sepa rate unit on methods for the study of aggression-a feature
that I believe to be unique to the present volume. In these ways, I
have at tempted to produce a text that is as broad and eclectic in
coverage as I could make it. While the present volume grew, in
part, out of my desire to pro duce what I thought might prove to be
a useful teaching aid, it also developed out of a second major
motive. During the past few years, a large number of new-and to me,
exciting-lines of investigation have emerged in rapid order. These
have been extremely varied in scope, including, among many others,
such diverse topics as the effects of sexual arousal upon
aggression, the impact of environmental factors (e. g., heat,
noise, crowding) upon such behavior, interracial aggres sion, and
the influence of heightened self-awareness. Despite the fact that
such topics have already generated a considerable amount of re
search, they were not, to my knowledge, adequately represented irt
any existing volume. Given this state of affairs, it seemed to me
that a reasonably comprehensive summary of this newer work might
prove both useful and timely."

This straightforward introduction to radical political economy
strikes a balance between breadth and depth, and was written for
the beginning student and others interested in a relatively short
text on the essential foundations of radical economics. It is free
of technical jargon, yet key concepts are well explained. The text
covers a comprehensive range of topics beginning with a chapter on
Marx followed by separate chapters on contemporary radical
political economy methods and core concepts, theory of production
and work, the capitalist system, the contradictions of capitalism,
and radical alternatives to capitalism. The author leaves the
differences and debates among radical economics for more advanced
study, and each chapter includes an extensive topical reading list.
News about sleep is everywhere we turn, and the statistics are
numbing: Some 50-70 million Americans are affected by chronic sleep
disorders and intermittent sleep problems; an estimated 30-35% of
adults complain of insomnia; one in every 25 Americans takes a
prescription sleep medication; more than a third of American adults
don't get enough sleep on a regular basis; sleep disorders account
for an estimated $16 billion in medical costs each year, plus
indirect costs due to missed days of work, decreased productivity
and related factors. And questions abound: why do we need to sleep
at all? What happens when we sleep? What happens to the brain? We
know the brain is active when we sleep, but what about the mind?
And what are dreams? An accessible and lively take on sleep, this
book provides answers to those and other key questions. Along the
way, it highlights the lessons a well-known neurologist has learned
and what he shares with his patients on a daily basis. It discusses
- in terms everyone can understand - what we know about sleep, what
can go wrong with it, and what we can do to fix it. It also delves
into what some of the great scientists and spiritual teachers have
told us about sleep. The book is packed with useful information and
suggestions that will improve all aspects of readers' lives.
