Diasporic Africa - A Reader (Hardcover): Michael A. Gomez Diasporic Africa - A Reader (Hardcover)
Michael A. Gomez
R2,665 Discovery Miles 26 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Diasporic Africa presents the most recent research on the history and experiences of people of African descent outside of the African continent. By incorporating Europe and North Africa as well as North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean, this reader shifts the discourse on the African diaspora away from its focus solely on the Americas, underscoring the fact that much of the movement of people of African descent took place in Old World contexts. This broader view allows for a more comprehensive approach to the study of the African diaspora.

The volume provides an overview of African diaspora studies and features as a major concern a rigorous interrogation of "identity." Other primary themes include contributions to western civilization, from religion, music, and sports to agricultural production and medicine, as well as the way in which our understanding of the African diaspora fits into larger studies of transnational phenomena.

The book is written in the language of modern quantum field theory. Some of the theoretical topics treated are: decoupling, the Goldstone theorem, the non-linear sigma model, anomalies, the Wess--Zumino--Witten term, and the equivalence theorem.

Crisis Management Beyond the Humanitarian-Development Nexus (Hardcover): Atsushi Hanatani, Oscar A. Gomez, Chigumi Kawaguchi Crisis Management Beyond the Humanitarian-Development Nexus (Hardcover)
Atsushi Hanatani, Oscar A. Gomez, Chigumi Kawaguchi
R4,080 Discovery Miles 40 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In addressing humanitarian crises, the international community has long understood the need to extend beyond providing immediate relief, and to engage with long-term recovery activities and the prevention of similar crises in the future. However, this continuum from short-term relief to rehabilitation and development has often proved difficult to achieve. This book aims to shed light on the continuum of humanitarian crisis management, particularly from the viewpoint of major bilateral donors and agencies. Focusing on cases of armed conflicts and disasters, the authors describe the evolution of approaches and lessons learnt in practice when moving from emergency relief to recovery and prevention of future crises. Drawing on an extensive research project conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency Research Institute, this book compares how a range of international organizations, bilateral cooperation agencies, NGOs, and research institutes have approached the continuum in international humanitarian crisis management. The book draws on six humanitarian crises case studies, each resulting from armed conflict or natural disasters: Timor-Leste, South Sudan, the Syrian crisis, Hurricane Mitch in Honduras, the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia, and Typhoon Yolanda. The book concludes by proposing a common conceptual framework designed to appeal to different stakeholders involved in crisis management. Following on from the World Humanitarian Summit, where a new way of working on the humanitarian-development nexus was highlighted as one of five major priority trends, this book is a timely contribution to the debate which should interest researchers of humanitarian studies, conflict and peace studies, and disaster risk-management.

Geotechnics in Pavement and Railway Design and Construction (Hardcover, New ed.): A.Gomes Correia, A. Loizos Geotechnics in Pavement and Railway Design and Construction (Hardcover, New ed.)
A.Gomes Correia, A. Loizos
R3,911 Discovery Miles 39 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Design and construction of pavements and railways for high speed trains is moving from merely empirical procedures towards a more mechanistic approach based on a better constructed theoretical basis. This will facilitate the use of new materials in transportation infrastructure under various climatic and traffic (load and speed) conditions. In addition, this will lead to a future challenge to implement a common framework between road, railway and geotechnical engineers. These contributions represent an excellent source of recent developments related to the design and construction of pavements, rail tracks and earth structures with emphasis placed on geotechnical background.

Human Security Norms in East Asia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Yoichi Mine, Oscar A. Gomez, Ako Muto Human Security Norms in East Asia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Yoichi Mine, Oscar A. Gomez, Ako Muto
R3,486 Discovery Miles 34 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book reveals how the idea of human security, combined with other human-centric norms, has been embraced, criticized, modified and diffused in East Asia (ASEAN Plus Three). Once we zoom in to the regional space of East Asia, we can see a kaleidoscopic diversity of human security stakeholders and their values. Asian stakeholders are willing to engage in the cultural interpretation and contextualization of human security, underlining the importance of human dignity in addition to freedom from fear and from want. This dignity element, together with national ownership, may be the most important values added in the Asian version of human security.

A. Sahuquillo, J.F. Lopez-Sanchez, Christine Gleyzes, Veronique Ruban, R. Comans, …
R2,749 Discovery Miles 27 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The analysis of soils and sediments for pollutants is increasingly required in today's industrial world. It is therefore important that extraction procedures used for environmental risk assessment studies, production of certified reference materials and applications of extraction schemes are standardised throughout the scientific community. This book deals specifically with operationally-defined extraction methods for the determination of "fractions" of elements in soil and sediment matrices. Bringing together the work of a number of different international laboratories, the book describes single and sequential extraction procedures. It then goes on to present a summary of the latest research on extraction/leaching tests for the determination of trace organic compounds in wastes, followed by an outline of an international network which aims to standardise extraction and leaching methodologies for their applications to various environmental matrices. Methodologies for Soil and Sediment Fractionation Studies will be welcomed by researchers and analysts in academia, industry and government institutions worldwide.

Regulation for Revenue - The Political Economy of Land Use Exactions (Paperback): Alan A. Altshuler, Jose A. Gomez-Ibanez Regulation for Revenue - The Political Economy of Land Use Exactions (Paperback)
Alan A. Altshuler, Jose A. Gomez-Ibanez
R600 Discovery Miles 6 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the past two decades Americans have become increasingly skeptical about the benefits of community growth and hostile to new taxes--while continuing to demand improvements in local services. One response to this tension has been a burgeoning movement to raise public revenue by regulating growth. In this timely book, the authors explain that most growing localities now require private developers to finance public improvements as a condition for receiving permits to build. These permit conditions, known as "exactions," are most commonly used to ensure that infrastructure capacity will be adequate to serve the occupants of new real estate developments and to lessen the harmful effects of these developments on other local citizens. Exactions are often used to finance new roads, water and waste disposal facilities, and public open space, but some communities have begun to require developer financing for such services as day care, job training, low-cost housing, and ride sharing. The authors see the dramatic growth of exaction financing as an epochal shift in the character of American land use regulation. A function once isolated from the local government mainstream is now close to heart of fiscal and public works decisionmaking. Politicians find exactions an extremely valuable tactic for resolving land use conflict. Lawyers and developers worry about how to establish appropriate limits on the use of exaction, economists debate their equity and efficiency, and planners consider their effect on urban reform. Regulation for Revenue offers an integrated appraisal of exaction financing, showing that exactions come in many forms and that they can be meaningfully evaluated only by comparison with realistic alternatives. These include growth restrictions, tolerance of infrastructure overload, and increased tax and user charges.

Reversing Sail - A History of the African Diaspora (Hardcover, New): Michael A. Gomez Reversing Sail - A History of the African Diaspora (Hardcover, New)
Michael A. Gomez
R2,111 Discovery Miles 21 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This 2005 book examines the global unfolding of the African Diaspora, the migrations and dispersals of the people of Africa, from antiquity to the modern period. Their exploits, challenges, and struggles are discussed over a wide expanse of time in ways that link as well as differentiate past and present circumstances. The experiences of Africans in the Old World, in the Mediterranean and Islamic worlds, is followed by their movement into the New, where their experience in lands claimed by Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French and English colonial powers is analyzed from enslavement through to the Cold War. While appropriate mention is made of persons of renown, particular attention is paid to the everyday lives of working class people and their cultural efflorescence. The book also attempts to explain contemporary plights and struggles through the lens of history.

Sampllng Fundamental Aspects 2 Sampling: Fundamental aspects Reimar Leschber Institut fuer Wasser-, Boden- und Lufthygiene des Bundesge- sundheitsamtes, Berlin-Dahlem, Federal Republic of Germany Chairman of Working Party 2, COST 681 Protection of the environment increasingly requires the de- velopment of a recycling society using 'secondary raw ma- terials' instead of natural resources wherever possible. Among the methods of recycling the agricultural use of sludge is a traditional one and a good example with a long history of a meanlngful use of waste material. Increasing demands of water pollution control in the last de- cades leading to intensified and extended sewage treatment processes and thus to an increase of the sludge quantity have caused problems in this field in general. In addition, there were local problems of industrial pollution which have led to an increase of harmful substances in municipal sewage sludges. So, when the Concerted Action COST 68 was set up to study the beneficial and harmful effects of the agricultural use of sludge, investigation of harmful substances in the sludges and their environmental effects was 9ne of the main tasks of work. Although the progress of analytical techniques enabled the environmental authorities and institutions to determine harmful substances in sludges with great accuracy, it became clear that unsatisfactory results and an incomplete reproduc- ibility of analytical findings often were not due to shortcom- ings in the analytical procedure itself but to a preceding in- vestigation step: Improper sampling and sample preparation.

Pragmatism in the Age of Jihad - The Precolonial State of Bundu (Hardcover, New): Michael A. Gomez Pragmatism in the Age of Jihad - The Precolonial State of Bundu (Hardcover, New)
Michael A. Gomez
R3,199 Discovery Miles 31 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bundu was an anomaly among the precolonial Muslim states of West Africa. Founded during the jihads which swept the savannah in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it developed a pragmatic policy, unique in the midst of fundamentalist, theocratic Muslim states. Located in the Upper Senegal and with access to the Upper Gambia, Bundu played a critical role in regional commerce and production and reacted quickly to the stimulus of European trade. Drawing upon a wide range of sources both oral and documentary, Arabic, English and French, Dr Gomez provides the first full account of Bundu's history. He analyses the foundation and growth of an Islamic state at a crossroads between the Saharan and trans-Atlantic trade, paying particular attention to the relationship between Islamic thought and court policy, and to the state's response to militant Islam in the early nineteenth century.

Jose Alonso, Jose A. Gomez-Pedrero, Juan A. Quiroga
R2,297 Discovery Miles 22 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a comprehensive account of the most recent developments in modern ophthalmic optics. It makes use of the powerful matrix formalism to describe curvature and power, providing a unified view of the optical and geometrical properties of lenses. This unified approach is applicable to the design and properties of not only spectacle lenses, but also contact and intraocular lenses (IOL). The newest developments in lens design, manufacturing and testing are discussed, with an emphasis on the description of free-form technology, which has surpassed traditional manufacturing methods and allows digital lenses to be specifically designed with the unique requirements of the user. Other important topics which are covered include modern lens materials, up-to-date lens measuring techniques, contact and intraocular lenses, progressive power lenses, low vision aids, ocular protection and coatings. Providing a broad overview of recent developments in the field, it is ideal for researchers, manufacturers and practitioners involved in ophthalmic optics.

Regularity Theory for Mean-Field Game Systems (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): Diogo A. Gomes, Edgard A. Pimentel, Vardan Voskanyan Regularity Theory for Mean-Field Game Systems (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Diogo A. Gomes, Edgard A. Pimentel, Vardan Voskanyan
R2,245 Discovery Miles 22 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Beginning with a concise introduction to the theory of mean-field games (MFGs), this book presents the key elements of the regularity theory for MFGs. It then introduces a series of techniques for well-posedness in the context of mean-field problems, including stationary and time-dependent MFGs, subquadratic and superquadratic MFG formulations, and distinct classes of mean-field couplings. It also explores stationary and time-dependent MFGs through a series of a-priori estimates for solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi and Fokker-Planck equation. It shows sophisticated a-priori systems derived using a range of analytical techniques, and builds on previous results to explain classical solutions. The final chapter discusses the potential applications, models and natural extensions of MFGs. As MFGs connect common problems in pure mathematics, engineering, economics and data management, this book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in these fields.
