Allegations of treason, real or imagined, always rankle. So much more when a life and death struggle of a nation is perceived to be at stake. Yet treason is common in warfare and accusations of sedition abound in any war.

While this book focuses specifically on the intricacies of alleged Afrikaner treason during a particularly volatile period, the analysis is also informed by an awareness of treason in the wider context.

Frederik van Zyl Slabbert was a man on a mission, whether as an academic, opposition politician, democratic facilitator or businessman. When he famously led a delegation of leading Afrikaners to Dakar in 1987 to meet the exiled ANC, many saw it as a breakthrough moment, while others felt he had been taken in. And yet his reputation – for honesty, integrity, wit and courage – still towers above many of his contemporaries.

An academic turned politician, Slabbert brought unusual intellectual rigour to Parliament, transforming the upstart Progressive Federal Party into a force that could challenge the National Party. Disillusioned by South African society, he resigned in 1986 to explore democratic alternatives. Sidelined during the democratic transition, he continued to pursue a broad range of initiatives aimed at building democracy, empowering black South Africans and transforming the economy.

Grundlingh offers insights into this most unlikely politician, providing new perspectives on a figure who even today remains an enigma.

This insightful volume examines the implications of metaphors and styles deployed in visual culture, and considers how the design, production, collecting and commissioning of objects, images and architecture were informed by Afrikaner nationalist imperatives and ideals. While some chapters focus only on instances of adherence to Afrikaner nationalism, others consider articulations of dissent and criticism. By 'troubling' these images: looking at them, teasing out their meanings, and connecting them to a political and social project that still has a major impact on the present moment, the authors engage with the ways in which an Afrikaner nationalist inheritance is understood and negotiated in contemporary South Africa. They examine the management of its material effects in contemporary art, in archives, the commemorative landscape and the built environment. Troubling Images adds to current debates about the histories and ideological underpinnings of nationalism and is particularly relevant in the current context of globalism and diaspora, resurgent nationalisms and calls for decolonisation.

The book also draws out the wider geo-political significance of South African sport, placing it in the context of the development of sport both elsewhere on the African continent and internationally. The history of sport has seen significant international growth over the past few decades. For the most part, however, the history of sport in Africa has remained largely untraced. By detailing the way in which sport 's development in South Africa overlapped with major socio-political processes on the wider African continent, this volume seeks to narrow the gap.

Social history has until now proven to be the most suitable point of departure to pursue the wider connections between sport, leisure and society or explore the interconnections between sport and leisure on the one hand and Afrikaner political and cultural projects on the other. Afrikaner groups at various stages in the twentieth century sought to spend their time when they were not at work by attending dog races during the thirties in Johannesburg, holidaying at the beach at Hartenbos in the southwestern Cape in the fifties or supporting or playing rugby and later cricket.The unifying theme that runs throughout this book is the different ways in which sport and leisure practices during certain historical eras were connected with wider concerns in Afrikaner society and how they contributed substantially to shaping the Afrikaner world of sport and leisure. This analysis of sport and society has a wider relevance. While standard nationalistic interpretations of Afrikaner political history have withered away since the advent of the African National Congress in 1994, in rugby the story of the fame and glory of the Springboks and their grounding in Afrikaner historical memory has carried on largely uninterrupted.

The centenary of the First World War presents historians with an opportunity to reflect anew upon South African participation in that war and particularly the role played by South African black and coloured participants in the conflict. Drawing upon a wide range of sources, the author analyses the interplay between war and society: the expectations of different groupings at the outbreak of war; the concerns and constraints which circumscribed the role of black and coloured troops; the nature of the recruiting process and the reasons why men enlisted; the realities of service in what was South-West Africa and East Africa, as well as in France and Palestine; and the socio-political ramifications of war service. In addition, the remembrance of the SS Mendi disaster in 1917 and its subsequent mythological dimensions are assessed, as are the notions of a presumed Cape Corps military tradition.
