Leading sociologists who live and work in East Asia examine their
region's most dangerous and explosive social problems, and some of
their most stunning success stories, from the viewpoint of Civil
Sphere Theory. This new and increasingly influential sociological
understanding of democracy aims to describe and explain the moral
codes and institutional foundations of democratic solidarity, as it
manifests itself within a distinct social sphere. Part of a
multi-volume project, this collection includes cases from Japan,
mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea, bringing
together efforts by sociologists based in East Asian academic
institutions. Through an extraordinary blend of sophisticated
social theory and path-breaking empirical research, The Civil
Sphere in East Asia aims to advance civil sphere theory by
globalizing and regionalizing it at the same time.

The XIV International Symposium on Brain Edema and Brain Tissue
Injury took place in Warsaw, Poland, on 11-14 June 2008. Two
prominent members of the International Society for Brain Edema: Dr.
Igor Klatzo and Dr. Julien Hoff have passed away after the last
2005 Symposium in Ann Arbor, USA. Dr. Igor Klatzo was actually the
founder of the Society, and the Advisory Board decided to
commemorate Dr. Igor Klatzo by introducing a lecture named after
him to be given at the Symposium. Prof. Dr. Hans-Jurgen Reulen has
been honored to give the frst Igor Klatzo lecture entitled "Bulk
Flow and Diffusion revisited, and Clinical Applications". This
volume contains 65 out of the 104 papers presented at the Symposium
as lectures or posters. The topics of the Symposium were similar to
those discussed at the previous ones. Many discussions focused on
clinical work especially diagnosis, subarachnoid hemorrhage,
hydrocephalus, and traumatic brain injury. Diagnosis and therapy,
including surgical methods, have also been verifed. Much attention
was drawn to the application of decompressive craniectomy in the
treatment of posttr- matic intracranial hypertension. The
pathomechanisms of brain edema and tissue injury studied in
experimental models have been also presented.
One hundred years after the Azusa Street Revival stunned Los
Angeles and changed Western Christianity, Pentecostalism has become
the fastest growing religious movement in the world. However, many
Pentecostal denominations in the United States are in a slow
decline. Will Pentecostalism survive in North America in the
twenty-first century? If so, what forms will it take? The Future of
Pentecostalism in the United States brings together leading
scholars of charismatic and Pentecostal Christianity to discuss and
forecast these issues. The book looks at American Pentecostalism
from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including sociology,
theology, history, and the arts. The book also considers various
traditions and sub-movements within U.S. Pentecostalism, such as
African American Pentecostal and charismatic Latino churches, urban
postmodern charismatic congregations, and the role of Pentecostal
institutions of higher education.

Set at the time of the Third Crusade (1189 - 92), The Betrothed is
the first of Scott's Tales of the Crusaders. The betrothed is
Eveline, daughter of a Norman noble, who is a victim of the Crusade
in that her intended husband is required by the Church to fulfil
his vow to join the war and departs for three years. The full
horror of an arranged marriage, and of being a possible prize as
men seek to gain possession of her is vividly realised--the heroine
is never free; her fate is always determined by the agency of men.
And being set on the Marches of Wales, it is not just men but
differing cultures that strive for mastery over her. The Betrothed
is a problem novel: as Scott was writing he himself was arranging
the marriage of his elder son. It is a problem novel too in that it
was deeply disliked by Scott's printer and publisher who forced
significant changes. What Scott was required to do to meet their
objections has been confronted for the first time in this, the
first critical edition of the novel.

Woodstock opens in farce, yet it is one of Scott's darkest novels.
It deals with revolution, to Scott the most disturbing of all
subjects: 'it appears that every step we made towards liberty, has
but brought us in view of more terrific perils'. Written during the
financial crisis which led to his insolvency in January 1826, the
novel, Scott feared, 'would not stand the test'. Yet it does: it is
set in England in 1651 as Parliamentary forces hunt the fugitive
Charles Stewart who days previously had been defeated at Worcester.
In the superb portrait of Cromwell we see a self-torturing despot
who attempts to be in full control in the name of religion; in the
rakish Charles we see a man without self-reflection whose own
libertarianism after his restoration to the English throne in 1660
permitted a great burgeoning in scientific enquiry and the arts.
This edition of Woodstock is based on the first, but emended in the
light of readings in the manuscript and proofs that were misread,
and at times deliberately suppressed, as Scott's own hand-written
words were turned into a printed book.

A reader-friendly, fully illustrated colour guide to Robert Burns'
time in Edinburgh, with fresh research, maps and illustrations of
the key people Burns met, with 27 relevant poems by Burns
throughout. With over 100 illustrations by David Alexander and 80
photographs by Jerry Brannigan of key people and places Burns
encountered. Easy to follow routes and walking guides in Edinburgh
arranged by area and place/people. Tourist information about each
site. Robert Burns came to Edinburgh in November 1786 and stayed
for 14 months. His book, Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect,
Kilmarnock Edition , went on sale on July 31, 1786 and was an
immediate success throughout Scotland. Suddenly,he was being spoken
of the length and breadth of the land. His plan to emigrateto
Jamaica with any profit from the sales of the book was abandoned.
Burns's life was about to change! Dr Thomas Blacklock, known as the
Blind Poet, came to know of the book. Blacklock was a much
respected poet and critic, acquainted with the cream of literary
society in Scotland and he advised Burns to travel to the nation's
capital where a larger edition was promised. Blacklock was sure it
would have a more universal circulation than "anything else that
had been published within his memory". So it was that on November
27, 1786 that Robert Burns, on a borrowed pony, set off on the
two-day journey to Edinburgh. It was at the peak of the Scottish
Enlightenment. Edinburgh at the time was home to great
philosophers, world-renowned economists, engineers, scientists,
writers and poets. Enterprise and industry were flourishing. Robert
Burns was to find himself thrust into the midst of the social and
academic whirlpool that was Edinburgh in 1786, establishing him as
a vital part of the Scottish Enlightenment. This book chronicles
the places he visited and the brilliant, eccentric, but always
fascinating people he met during his stay. Places including Lodge
Canongate Kilwinning No. 2, The Kirk of the Canongate, Old Calton
Burial Ground, St. Cecilia's Hall, Pear Tree House, The
Luckenbooths and many more. People including, The Duchess of
Gordon, Lord Monboddo, James (Balloon) Tytler, Bishop John Geddes,
(Indian) Peter Williamson and a host more. Learn of his meeting
with a young Sir Walter Scott, and - let's not forget - Mrs Agnes
McLehose, his Clarinda, and inspiration for Ae Fond Kiss. Robert
Burns left Edinburgh on March 24, 1788. He was only 29. He was to
die in Dumfries eight years later at the age of 37.
Welcome home. A place 200 million years in the making.
Long ago, our planet had only one gigantic land mass. Then something
monumental happened. That supercontinent ruptured and seven different
worlds were born.
Each of those worlds - or continents - evolved, and continues to
evolve, its own way of life. From the jungle of the Congo or the
majestic Himalayas to the densely populated wilds of Europe or the
comparatively isolated Australasia, Seven Worlds, One Planet explores
the natural wonders that give each of our continents its distinct
character. Following the animals that have made these iconic
environments their home, it discovers spectacular wildlife stories that
reveal what makes each of these seven worlds unique.
With a foreword by Sir David Attenborough and over 250 breathtaking
images, including stills from the BBC Natural History Unit’s
spectacular footage, Seven Worlds, One Planet is a stunning exploration
of the planet, and the worlds within it, that we call home.
