Facing internal rebellion and the threat posed by German troops on
South Africa’s borders, Prime Minister Louis Botha and his deputy, Jan
Smuts, led the Union Defence Force during the First World War. This
first-of-a-kind volume investigates the wartime roles of these two
legendary yet divisive historical figures.
Both men commanded in the field. The army they commanded gained
resilience, experience and battle-hardiness, adapting to the conditions
of the campaigns and the demands of the tasks. South Africa’s campaigns
were complex and divergent, starting with the invasion of neighbouring
German South West Africa, moving to East Africa, Egypt, Palestine and
the devasting fighting at Delville Wood in France.
Behind Botha’s charming façade and Smuts’s stoic machine, were two very
human, imperfect men. Together they provide a wonderful lens through
which to examine the potent forces of the early 20th -century world and
the country they hoped to forge. Myopic compatriots had constrained
their plans, but it was the outbreak of war in 1914 that offered the
most significant opportunities and brought the most adverse challenges.
They fought insurmountable odds and achieved great victories, at home
and abroad, but also made startling errors and, ultimately, in
classical fashion risked being crushed by the weight of the world they
tried to create.
According to the United Nations, the number of people aged 60 years
or over in the world is projected to be 1.4 billion in 2030 and 2.1
billion in 2050. Endocrinologists and other clinicians face the
challenge of caring for the elderly. To do so, they need to
incorporate geriatric principles into their clinical practice.
Endocrinology of Aging: Clinical Aspects in Diagrams and Images
presents chapters in a way that allows the reader to incorporate
concepts and main facts of complex subjects in a visual way. As the
global population becomes older, the need for a deeper
understanding of geriatric pathology increases, and with it, the
access to educational resources for the endocrinology and
metabolism of aging.
Intelligent Data Sensing and Processing for Health and Well-being
Applications uniquely combines full exploration of the latest
technologies for sensor-collected intelligence with detailed
coverage of real-case applications for healthcare and well-being at
home and in the workplace. Forward-thinking in its approach, the
book presents concepts and technologies needed for the
implementation of today's mobile, pervasive and ubiquitous systems,
and for tomorrow's IoT and cyber-physical systems. Users will find
a detailed overview of the fundamental concepts of gathering,
processing and analyzing data from devices disseminated in the
environment, as well as the latest proposals for collecting,
processing and abstraction of data-sets. In addition, the book
addresses algorithms, methods and technologies for diagnosis and
informed decision-making for healthcare and well-being. Topics
include emotional interface with ambient intelligence and emerging
applications in detection and diagnosis of neurological diseases.
Finally, the book explores the trends and challenges in an array of
areas, such as applications for intelligent monitoring in the
workplace for well-being, acquiring data traffic in cities to
improve the assistance of first aiders, and applications for
supporting the elderly at home.

Knowledge of cutaneous lymphomas has been growing significantly as
a result of important discoveries in immunology, molecular biology,
and immunohistochemistry. Improved clinical pathologic correlation
and follow-up data, as well as the synergistic collaboration among
different lymphoma registries and specialists from several academic
medical centers have greatly contributed to the understanding of
the difficult field of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders.
While these advances have increased understanding of skin
lymphomas, they have also produced an extensive and sometimes
confusing litany of articles, studies, and classification schemes.
This issue on Cutaneous Lymphomas in Surgical Pathology Clinics
provides an organized and updated review of this challenging topic
by leading experts. It bridges critical knowledge gaps in the
diagnosis of cutaneous lymphomas. Sezary Syndrome, Mycosis
Fungoides and variants are presented along with B-cell, CD30,
lymphoproliferative disorders among others. In addition to multiple
clinical and microscopic images, tables and algorithms are
presented to aid in diagnosis and staging. Beyond its usefulness to
general pathologists, dermatopathologists, and hematopathologists,
this information is intended to be helpful for dermatologists,
hematologists/oncologists, fellows, and residents.
Contemporary developments in the book publishing industry are
changing the system as we know it. Changes in established
understandings of authorship and readership are leading to new
business models in line with the postulates of Web 2.0. Socially
networked authorship, book production and reading are among the
social and discursive practices starting to define this emerging
system. Websites offering socially networked, collaborative and
shared reading are increasingly important. Social Reading maps
socially networked reading within the larger framework of a
changing conception of books and reading. This book is structured
into chapters covering topics in: social reading and a new
conception of the book; an evaluation of social reading platforms;
an analysis of social reading applications; the personalization of
system contents; reading in the Cloud and the development of new
business models; and Open Access e-books.
Discusses social reading as an emerging tendency involving authors,
readers, librarians, publishers, and other industry
professionalsDescribes how the way we read is changingPresents ways
in which the major players in the digital content industry are
developing specific applications to foster socially networked
reading
Wood adhesives are of tremendous industrial importance, as more
than two-thirds of wood products in the world today are completely
or partially bonded together using a variety of adhesives. Adhesive
bonding offers many advantages over other joining methods for wood
components, and there has been a great deal of R& D activity in
devising new wood adhesives or improving the existing ones. The
modern mantra in all industrial sectors is: "think green, go
green," which has attracted much attention in the wood adhesive
industry. Therefore, there is also a lot of research activity in
synthesizing environmentally benign and human-friendly wood
adhesives. This book is divided into four parts: Part 1:
Fundamental Adhesion Aspects in Wood Bonding; Part 2: Synthetic
Adhesives; Part 3: Environment-friendly adhesives; and Part 4: Wood
Welding and General Paper. It addresses many different types of
wood adhesives, as well as bonding (welding) of wood components
without adhesives, a more recent development. The information
contained in this book is valuable for individuals engaged in all
aspects of wood adhesion and adhesives and, hopefully, will inspire
new ideas in wood adhesives, a topic of vital industrial
importance.

Fast-paced action movie starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Mickey
Rourke. The Courier (Morgan) has earned his nickname through a
remarkable ability to track down individuals and deliver messages
and packages. The Courier is particularly prized, in certain
circles, for his refusal to ask questions or query the legality of
the material he carries. However, when he is handed a package by a
branch of the Russian mafia and asked to deliver it to an
especially notorious underworld figure, The Courier's skills will
be tested to the limit. He believes he has made a breakthrough when
he gets in contact with Maxwell (Mickey Rourke), a former associate
of the elusive figure he is seeking, but how far can Maxwell be
trusted?
