This book explores the potential of participatory research and the
capability approach to transform understandings of higher
education. The editors and contributors illuminate the importance
of epistemic in/justice as a foundation to a reflexive, inclusive
and decolonial approach to knowledge, as well as its importance to
democratic life and participation in higher education. Drawing
together eight global case studies, the authors argue for an
ecology of knowledge that expands epistemic capabilities in higher
education through teaching, research and policy making. Moreover,
the chapters illustrate how these epistemic capabilities can be
marginalised by both institutions and structural and historical
factors; as well as the potential for possibilities when spaces are
opened for genuine participation and designed for a plurality of
voices. This book will appeal to scholars of social justice and
participatory research as well as ongoing debates around
decolonising the academy.
Actions of French Cavalry 1870
by Jean Jacques The ophile Bonie
Cavalry at Vionville & Mars-la-Tour
by Otto August Johannes Kaehler
Two views of European cavalry warfare in the 19th Century
If the American Civil War taught what war would become in the world
of the post Industrial Revolution, the lesson was thoroughly learnt
and its consequences best demonstrated in the Franco-Prussian War
by Prussia itself. France remained anchored in spirit and much
practice to the First Empire and paid the inevitable price exacted
by her forward thinking enemy. Although the development of
technology, logistical transportation, communications and mass
production were making their presence felt in warfare, the fast,
completely flexible movement of troops yet remained the province of
the horse soldier and this may have provided a 'level playing
field' for the protagonists. Yet even in this the Prussians out
matched the French by rethinking the potentials of the mounted arm.
The war contained cavalry engagements of massive proportions with
appalling consequences for loss of life. For those who know
anything of the history of cavalry at war the conflict of
Mars-la-Tour, covered in depth in the pages of this book, will be
significant. Two accounts of the cavalry during the Franco-Prussian
War are included here. The first, written by a French cavalry
officer shortly after the war, inevitably reveals the war from the
French perspective. Bonie was an eyewitness to the events he
describes and his text is immediate and poignant. Kaehler's text,
from the perspective of the opposing camp, is a work of analytical
history, though of equal value. This book originally appeared with
a third piece concerning the American Civil War but this has been
removed from this edition by the Leonaur editors to give the
present edition a clearer more focus. Available in softcover and
hardback for collectors."

This volume gathers contributions from the final workshop of the
RILEM TC-251-SRT "Sulfate Resistance Testing" on External Sulfate
Attack (TESA 2018), held on May 24-25, 2018 at IETcc-CSIC, Madrid,
Spain. One of the Technical Committee's main events, it addressed
various aspects of external sulfate attack in concrete structures
and test methods. The workshop promoted technical discussions and
debates on ideas on these topics, with a focus on evaluating the
resistance of concrete exposed to ESA. It also provided a forum for
participants from around the globe to share their experiences and
research on concrete structures affected by external sulfate attack
and on test methods. The book discusses the latest advances in
research related to ESA and new developments in test methods, and
features real-world case studies of concrete structures affected by
external sulfate attack in various countries. It also presents new
studies linking field cases and lab tests, including 12
contributions on 3 main themes: mechanisms of alteration in
external sulfate attack; field aspects of external sulfate attack;
and testing to evaluate the resistance of concrete to external
sulfate attack.
This book is the first full-length educational sonic ethnography.
Examines the spaces and places in school where various forms of
capital normalize violence against students of color. Includes
interviews by uploading sound files to a companion site and
hyperlinking the files in the text.
This book engages with the concept “queer battle fatigue,”
which is the everyday exhaustion that LGBTQIA+ people and
communities often experience from anti-queer norms and values.
Contributors express how this concept is often experienced across
spaces and places, from schools to communities. Queer Battle
Fatigue is one way to express the everyday exhaustion that LGBTQIA+
people and communities often feel that is a result sociopolitical
and cultural anti-queer norms and values. In this volume,
contributors think about how queer battle fatigue hits bodies and
their multiple ways of being, knowing, and doing. Chapters describe
how such violence flows from early childhood experiences to
universities and across community spaces. Contributors also
describe how people and communities resist and refuse anti-queer
norms and values, carving out pathways to live, love, and have joy
despite everyday oppressions. From calling on Black queer
ancestors, to using STEM education as a safe space, to artistic
representations of identities, the chapters in Queer Battle Fatigue
ask readers to consider how to disrupt and deconstruct anti-queer
norms while also engaging in the many beautiful forms of queer joy
as an act of resistance. Queer Battle Fatigue will be a key
resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of
Education, Qualitative Research, Queer Theory and Gender Studies,
Educational Research and Curiculum Studies. The chapters included
in this book were originally published as a special issue of
International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education.
Focusing on the underlying politics behind children's food, this
book highlights the variety of social relationships, expectations
and emotions ingrained in feeding children in Poland. With rich
ethnographic accounts, including research with children, the book
demonstrates how families, schools, the food industry and state
agencies shape and experience feeding anxieties, and how such
anxiety is at the heart of a new form of sociality. The book
complicates our understanding of health and modern subjectivity and
unpacks what and how we feed children today.
