For 250 years the Bryan Rostron’s family spread across the globe, helping to expand the British Empire and paint the map red. This is a personal reckoning with that dubious legacy, echoing down to the present in South Africa.
It begins with the ‘discovery’ of Tahiti in 1767 by an ancestor, from whose log book Rostron reveals that his sailors were exchanging the ship’s nails for sex with Tahitian maidens so that HMS Dolphin began, literally, to fall apart.
After the Anglo-Boer war, having emigrated to South Africa, one grandfather became editor of the Sunday Times, voicing racist opinions, and later of the Rand Daily Mail, at that time a voice of the Randlords. Ironically, his other grandfather worked for the Communist Party and printed revolutionary pamphlets for the violent 1922 Rand Revolt. In a bizarre twist, Rostron’s father managed the 1936 South African boxing team at
the Berlin Olympics, where from under his nose their star boxer was recruited by the Nazis.
Uncovering family secrets and mistaken myths, Rostron offers a unique insight into modern-day South Africa’s colonial past.
New research on children's executive functioning and
self-regulation has begun to reveal important connections to their
developing social understanding (or "theories of mind") and
emotional competence. The exact nature of the relations between
these aspects of children's social and emotional development is,
however, far from being fully understood. Considerable disagreement
has emerged, for instance, over the question of whether executive
functioning facilitates social-emotional understanding, or vice
versa. Recent studies linking the development of children's social
understanding with aspects of their interpersonal relationships
also raise concerns about the particular role that social
interaction plays in the development of executive function. Three
key questions currently drive this debate: Does social interaction
play a role in the development of executive function or, more
generally, self-regulation? If it does play a role, what forms of
social interaction facilitate the development of executive
function? Do different patterns of interpersonal experience
differentially affect the development of self-regulation and social
understanding? In this book, the contributors address these
questions and explore other emerging theoretical and empirical
links between self-regulation, social interaction, and children's
psycho-social competence. It will be a valuable resource for
student and professional researchers interested in executive
function, emotion, and social development.

This is a detailed and innovative study of the use by the poet
Shelley, conventionally regarded as atheist, of ideas and imagery
from the Scriptures in expressing his world view. Assessing
Shelley's poetic theory and practice in relation to the Gnostic
heresies of the early church period and the Enlightenment critiques
of Scripture, the book shows the poet's method of biblical
interpretation to be heterodox and revisionist. Shelley's early
appropriation of Scriptural elements is seen to be based on the
Bible's ethical content and its ideals of the kingdom of heaven,
while in the period 1818-1820 he is a prophet in exile, an English
expatriate preoccupied with the nature of the mind (or self). The
final part of the study, which looks at Shelley's last two years,
focuses on the notion of an increasingly spiritualized self who
realizes that his kingdom is `not of this world'. A detailed
appendix sets out a large number of definite or possible Biblical
allusions in Shelley's poetry. Shelley and Scripture draws on a
deep knowledge of the Bible, and of the various currents in the
history of Biblical exegesis and Christian typology, to present a
timely re-evaluation of the influence on Shelley of the language
and traditions of Christianity.
For twenty-six straight seasons from 1978 to 2003 Mount Saint
Charles Academy captured the hearts of its fans and the state s
high school hockey championship. Attributing the streak to a
near-mystical force called Mount Pride, beloved coach Bill Belisle
and his team have built the most successful hockey program in Rhode
Island. In the thrilling 2013 season, they recaptured the Mount
glory as state champions. Yet the high school hockey team is much
more than its wins and losses it s a culture and a family.
Beginning with the earliest days when Rhode Island s four-team
league took to the frozen ponds with tree branches serving as
rudimentary hockey sticks, author Bryan Ethier chronicles the
history of the MSC Flying Frenchmen. Join Ethier as he takes to the
ice with the great games, the star players and the unforgettable
moments to tell the remarkable story of Mount Saint Charles Hockey.
Spanning centuries and the vastness of the Roman Empire, The Last
Statues of Antiquity is the first comprehensive survey of Roman
honorific statues in the public realm in Late Antiquity. Drawn from
a major research project and corresponding online database that
collates all the available evidence for the 'statue habit' across
the Empire from the late third century AD onwards, the volume
examines where, how, and why statues were used, and why these
important features of urban life began to decline in number before
eventually disappearing around AD 600. Adopting a detailed
comparative approach, the collection explores variation between
different regions-including North Africa, Asia Minor, and the Near
East-as well as individual cities, such as Aphrodisias, Athens,
Constantinople, and Rome. A number of thematic chapters also
consider the different kinds of honorand, from provincial governors
and senators, to women and cultural heroes. Richly illustrated, the
volume is the definitive resource for studying the phenomenon of
late-antique statues. The collection also incorporates extensive
references to the project's database, which is freely accessible
online.

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURED DIRECTED BY AND STARRING CHIWETEL
EJIOFOR - AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX When William Kamkwamba was just 14
years old, his family told him that he must leave school and come
home to work on the farm - they could no longer afford his fees.
This is his story of how he found a way to make a difference, how
he bought light to his family and village, and hope to his nation.
Malawi is a country battling AIDS, drought and famine, and in 2002,
a season of floods, followed by the most severe famine in fifty
years, brought it to its knees. Like the majority of the
population, William's family were farmers. They were totally
reliant on the maize crop. By the end of 2001, after many lean and
difficult years, there was no more crop. They were running out of
food - had nothing to sell - and had months until they would be
able to harvest their crop again. Forced to leave school at 14
years old, with no hope of raising the funds to go again, William
resorted to borrowing books from the small local library to
continue his education. One day, browsing the titles, he picked up
a book about energy, with a picture of a wind turbine on the front
cover. Fascinated by science and electricity, but knowing little
more about the technology, William decided to build his own.
Ridiculed by those around him, and exhausted from his work in the
fields every day, and using nothing more than bits of scrap metal,
old bicycle parts and wood from the blue gum tree, he slowly built
his very own windmill. This windmill has changed the world in which
William and his family live. Only 2 per cent of Malawi has
electricity; William's windmill now powers the lightbulbs and radio
for his compound. He has since built more windmills for his school
and his village. When news of William's invention spread, people
from across the globe offered to help him. Soon he was re-enrolled
in college and travelling to America to visit wind farms. This is
his incredible story. William's dream is that other African's will
learn to help themselves - one windmill and one light bulb at a
time - and that maybe one day they will be able to power their own
computers, and use the internet, and see for themselves how his
life has changed after picking up that book in the library.
Delve into the complex history of Herod the Great—his rise to power and
ultimate fall in pursuit to be the "King of the Jews." Under a
flourishing yet tumultuous background of Jerusalem, consider Mary of
Nazareth's place under Herod's rule and the promise of a Messiah to
free her people. Kathie Lee Gifford with Bryan M. Litfin, Ph.D. deftly
weave a truthful historical narrative full of accurate details and
sweeping prose that ushers in the true King and glorifies God's
powerful plan to bring a savior into the world through unlikely means.
A coda between the authors, full of honest revelation and insightful
meaning, follows each chapter for added in-depth reading.
The first installment in the Ancient Evil, Living Hope series, Herod
and Mary begins with the tragic life of King Herod—Christianity's first
true persecutor. As an impressionable boy, he is forever marked by the
raw power of Rome. Throughout the course of Herod's career, he gains
power, fame, and riches beyond belief. Yet murderous intrigues stalk
this man—and infect his own dark soul.
Under the rule of King Herod, Jerusalem becomes a prominent city of
wealth and prosperity, but Mary saw the struggle of her people under a
tyrant. Like all Jewish women, she knew the promises of Torah and
longed for a deliverer. But no one could have prepared her for what the
angel of God revealed: that the Messiah wouldn't arrive with the
blaring of trumpets, the clash of arms, or the fanfare of a mighty
host. He would arrive as an infant within her own womb. The light of
the world was born in a cave: not a king who maims and destroys, but
the gentle King of the Jews.
This riveting narrative nonfiction work reveals deep insight to how
Herod came to power, how corruption and an ancient evil threatened the
stability of a nation, and how a teenage Mary was called to traverse
these obstacles to bring the Savior, Jesus, our living hope, into the
world.

After more than a decade of tumult, Roman warrior Rex and his
aristocratic wife, Flavia, are thankful to the God they serve for
the peaceful life they are living in the city of Alexandria. But
with the Empire in flux, it cannot last. When Rex is called away to
serve Constantine in his fight against Licinius, Flavia's
loneliness and longing for a baby lead her down the road of
temptation. Perhaps one of Egypt's gods will grant her conception?
As battles rage both within and without, Rex and Flavia will have
to rely on God's forgiveness and protection if they are to survive
the trials to come. Their adventures sweep them into the great
events of the ancient church, including the forging of the Nicene
Creed, terrible murders within the imperial family, the quest for
the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and the end of pagan Rome as
a new Christian empire dawns. Bryan Litfin brings his epic
Constantine's Empire series to a thrilling close with this dramatic
tale of struggle and redemption.
