For many years, I have been interested in global analysis of
nonlinear systems. The original interest stemmed from the study of
snap-through stability and jump phenomena in structures. For
systems of this kind, where there exist multiple stable equilibrium
states or periodic motions, it is important to examine the domains
of attraction of these responses in the state space. It was through
work in this direction that the cell-to-cell mapping methods were
introduced. These methods have received considerable development in
the last few years, and have also been applied to some concrete
problems. The results look very encouraging and promising. However,
up to now, the effort of developing these methods has been by a
very small number of people. There was, therefore, a suggestion
that the published material, scattered now in various journal
articles, could perhaps be pulled together into book form, thus
making it more readily available to the general audience in the
field of nonlinear oscillations and nonlinear dynamical systems.
Conceivably, this might facilitate getting more people interested
in working on this topic. On the other hand, there is always a
question as to whether a topic (a) holds enough promise for the
future, and (b) has gained enough maturity to be put into book
form. With regard to (a), only the future will tell. With regard to
(b), I believe that, from the point of view of both foundation and
methodology, the methods are far from mature.
Coherent treatment of a variety of approaches to multiple
comparisons Broad coverage of topics, with contributions by
internationally leading experts Detailed treatment of applications
in medicine and life sciences Suitable for researchers, lecturers /
students, and practitioners

This book examines the agricultural policies and programs adopted
by the Chinese leadership since 1949 and analyzes the role of
agriculture in China's changing development strategies. Dr. Hsu
gives particular attention to the measures intended to improve
agricultural technology and to the sources of funds for
agricultural investment. He concludes that, although the collective
system has been effective in mobilizing China's rural resources for
agricultural development and in promoting progress in
labor-intensive agricultural technology, periodic extreme leftist
policies and interference by rural party cadres have caused various
kinds of inefficiency, offsetting the advantages gained from
collective farming. This is the first book to systematically
analyze the ways in which China's agricultural development is being
financed. By critically examining the level and nature of state
resources allocated to agriculture, the author challenges the view
that China has pursued an agriculture-first strategy of economic
development since the early 1960s.

In China, the decade 1979-88 featured an unprecedented willingness
to depart from the traditional dogmatic interpretations of
socialism and to enter into a discourse aimed at promoting economic
reforms and development. Robert C. Hsu systematically explores the
substance and logic of the evolution of the most vital
economic-reform theories prevalent in China during those years
(before the recent slow-down). He also examines and assesses the
delicate interaction between these theories and the practical
policies of the Chinese government. Hsu's analysis covers the
debates over exactly how to combine the market mechanism with
socialist planning. Chinese economists argued about how to
diversify the ownership system, how to implement price-wage
reforms, how to invigorate state-owned enterprises and make them
more efficient, and how to develop China's agriculture, industry
and foreign trade. Though Hsu critically dissects the diversity of
views and describes the shortcomings which will affect future
economic policies and theories, his mood is primarily an
affirmation of the new dynamic age of China's economics.

Since the publication of the first Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes
in 1967 the continuous compilation of mammalian karyotypes has
become a useful instrument in cytologic and taxonomic studies.
Technical advances in preparing mitotic cells from nonmammalian
vertebrates have since allowed a better comparison of taxa in
fishes, amphibia, reptiles, and birds. In these fields the
literature is also widely scat tered; and it has become difficult
to survey such information, published as well as unpublished, by
nonspecialists. These were among the reasons for the new endeavor
of compiling a chromosome atlas for nonmammalian vertebrates. An
annual publication is planned with presentation of between 10 and
15 karyotypes from each class. In this second volume, 52 species
are presented. For convenience in future colation, the numbering
system employs class abbreviations, viz., P-Pisces, Am-Amphibia,
R-Reptilia, and Av-Aves. Within each class, the numbers are
necessarily consecutive. In general the karyotypes are laid out
following the format employed in An Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes.
Whenever possible both sexes are represented, even though sexual
chromosomal dimorphism is not (currently) evident. When the sex
chromosomes are known, they are so indicated by conventional
nomenclature (XX/XY or ZW /ZZ). In the karyotypes of birds the
so-called microchromosomes are grouped together at the end without
an attempt at complete enumeration, which is presently impossible.
They are usually considered as acrocentrics, but a few are
distinctly biarmed."
This anthology presents papers that challenge conventional
viewpoints and ideas about business cycles and monetary policy.
Some of the selections bring fresh thinking to customary topics,
such as business cycle models in perfectly competitive markets, the
cyclicality of research and development expenditures, and the
effect of uncertainty shocks on consumer spending. Others address
concerns that have come to the fore in the aftermath of the global
financial crisis -- the consequences of quantitative easing, the
effectiveness of macro prudential policies, the impact of shadow
banking on the fractional-reserve banking system, and correlations
in credit default losses, among others. The collection is not meant
to be comprehensive (an impossible and uninteresting goal) but
rather to bring together noteworthy contributions that might
otherwise be submerged in the torrent of contemporary economic
writing. The selection criteria were the quality of thinking,
clarity of expression, and soundness of empirical research on
topics of compelling interest to people who are actively engaged in
the field of monetary economics. The papers included in this book
also represent a range of approaches to theoretical and applied
research. Some of them describe econometric tools and analytical
techniques that are adapted to the study of business cycles and
monetary policies. Others set forth conceptual frameworks and
conduct empirical analyses that offer new insights into
macroeconomic fluctuations. Still others adopt a strategy closer to
field work, in the form of case studies supported by extensive
statistical documentation. In sum, the papers presented in this
volume not only tackle topics of pressing interest; they also
illustrate the state of the art in the research methodologies
employed by monetary economists.
A small neighborhood in New York seems like a very dull place to
begin a story. But imagine this. A black Porsche spies on a
seemingly humble couple. Mr. and Mrs. Reade go about their daily
activities oblivious to their already decided fate. The two men
dressed in black seem to dampen the mood even more. Why? What is
this so called organization that seeks to eliminate members of a
most secretive Society? On the contrary, Justin Reade, a seventeen
year old teenager seems to just know it all. His skill for noticing
small details and untangling the mystified has allowed him to solve
numerous cases for the police. But misfortune follows him like that
of the sticky substance, crazy glue. Millionaire Francis Wayne
invites to him to a party at his mansion. However, is that what it
seems? Then, Justin was nominated to participate in the Young
Detective Competition at a so called Tortoise Island. However,
horror lurks at his path once again. Finally, he pays a visit to
the Louis family that seems to be cursed by a legendary instrument
worth thousands, perhaps millions of dollars. Is there such a thing
as a curse? Ultimately, is everything in life always what it seems?
Voices In the Wilderness is a devotional guide consisting of 100
true stories from God's servants who are taking the Gospel to the
unreached in the uttermost ends of the earth. Because they live in
remote places far from the eye of the media, their voices often go
unheard. We guarantee that the stories in this collection will stir
your heart to pray, challenge your spirit to adopt a higher
standard of Christian living, and more your soul to glorify God
