Coupled atmosphere-ocean models are at the core of numerical
climate models. There is an extraordinarily broad class of coupled
atmosphere-ocean models ranging from sets of equations that can be
solved analytically to highly detailed representations of Nature
requiring the most advanced computers for execution. The models are
applied to subjects including the conceptual understanding of
Earth's climate, predictions that support human activities in a
variable climate, and projections aimed to prepare society for
climate change. The present book fills a void in the current
literature by presenting a basic and yet rigorous treatment of how
the models of the atmosphere and the ocean are put together into a
coupled system. The text of the book is divided into chapters
organized according to complexity of the components that are
coupled. Two full chapters are dedicated to current efforts on the
development of generalist couplers and coupling methodologies all
over the world.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Since their first application in 1982, Totally Implantable Venous
Access Devices (TIVADs) have become increasingly important in the
clinical practice, as more intensive chemotherapy and parenteral
treatments have come into use. At this time, there is objective
evidence that TIVADs are a safe, effective strategy for long-term
venous access; they play a significant role throughout the
management of the oncology patient, as they are needed in the
initial phases for active treatments as well as in the last stages
for palliative measures, making possible repeated administration of
chemotherapeutic vesicant agents, nutrients, antibiotics,
analgesics, and blood products. According to a number of
prospective studies, use of TIVADs is associated with a significant
complication rate (10% to 25% of all patients). Evidence-based data
support that most complications are directly related to
inappropriate technique of placement and/or nursing care, sometimes
leading to TIVAD loss, significant morbidity, increased duration of
hospitalization, and additional medical cost. A group of
world-renowned experts - both in the clinical and research fields -
contributed to this volume, whose aim is to provide clinicians,
nurses and medical students with a multidisciplinary, full update
on these devices, as long term central venous access can no be
longer considered a routine matter, and serious complications can
be maintained at a very low level only if strict adherence to a
well-defined protocol of surgical technique and of catheter care is
maintained.
Since ancient times, mankind has used plants as a valuable source
of natural products for maintaining human health and to treat or
prevent diseases. The common knowledge around plants' healing
properties, known as folk medicine, has been transmitted over the
centuries for generations throughout human communities. The use of
natural products and herbal medicines have been documented in the
past. The antibacterial activity of plant extracts has been
reported since the late 1800s and some of these traditional
medicines are still used, especially in the last decade, with more
intensive studies for natural therapies. Active compounds produced
during vegetal metabolism are responsible for the antimicrobial and
biological properties interacting with specific chemical receptors
in the human body and, due to these components, plants extracts are
popular as anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial or anti-fungal drugs.
However, in the absence of scientific studies, the use of aleatory
plant extracts may lead to harmful adverse effects. Previously
considered empirical, current data on the antimicrobial activity
and biocompatibility of numerous plants have been scientifically
confirmed. Phytosciences, as ethnopharmacology or phytotherapy, are
emerging multidisciplinary areas with almost unlimited sources and
several aspects to be discussed. Recently, there has been a growing
trend to seek natural drugs as part of dental treatment. In
dentistry, the association of plant extracts with restorative
dentistry, endodontics or periodontics materials have been used to
reduce inflammation, as antimicrobial enhancer agent, antiseptics,
antifungals, antioxidants, analgesics or even as mouth rinse to
prevent or reduce dental plaque. Thus, this book will address the
use of plant extracts in different fields of dentistry,
highlighting its use in cariology, restorative dentistry,
endodontics and periodontics, besides other uses of herbal plants
in dentistry, as in dental trauma, osteointegration or hemostatic,
among others. As will be shown and stated, the vast variety of
different plants described in literature with medicinal properties
makes it impracticable to discuss all extracts found in scientific
literature. Therefore, this book will contribute with some of these
extracts and different methodologies to assess, as an introduction
to new research and new researchers. Also, different in vivo and in
vitro tests used to evaluate biological response, such as
biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity in dental treatment
will be discussed.
