Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions stands out from the competition due to its focus on three key characteristics: studies from scholars in different countries, with different research questions, relying on different theoretical perspectives. Such a broad and inclusive approach to mergers and acquisitions is not easily replicated in academic journals, with much narrower mandates and metrics. The chapters published in this volume provide cutting edge ideas by leading scholars, and help to inform mergers and acquisitions research around the world.

During the past two decades, the nature of work has changed dramatically, as more and more organizations downsize, outsource and move toward short-term contracts, part-time working and teleworking. The costs of stress in the workplace in most of the developed and developing world have risen accordingly in terms of increased sickness absence, labour turnover, burnout, premature death and decreased productivity. This book, in one volume, provides all the major theories of organizational stress from the leading researchers and writers in the field. It is a guide to identifying the sources of pressures in jobs and the workplace so that we may be able to intervene to change and manage the growing problem of organizational stress.
Never before has the world witnessed the phenomenon of severe stress and burnout on such a large scale as in recent years. Globalization, technological advances and economic meltdown have brought about a plethora of unprecedented challenges for industry and organizations across the globe. Consequently, executives have been under growing stress due to economic uncertainties, mergers and acquisitions, role erosion and restructuring, resulting in increased workloads, longer hours and demands for greater productivity and efficiency. This changing environment has created job insecurity, anxiety, dissatisfaction and emotional exhaustion causing a rapid increase in executive burnout. This book provides the most comprehensive analysis of the construct of burnout, including its magnitude, a global research review, a typology of models, comparisons between professions and consequences of burnout for individuals and organizations. In addition, it provides the views of mental health professionals, empirically derived causes, symptoms and coping techniques, while throwing light on preventative measures and comparing Eastern and Western approaches to mitigate the effects of burnout.
What makes the "Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions" series stand out is its focus on all three characteristics that make up this research field - studies from scholars in different countries, with different research questions, relying on different theoretical perspectives. Such a broad, and inclusive, approach to mergers and acquisitions is not easily replicated in academic journals, with much narrower mandates and metrics. The collections published each year provide cutting edge ideas by leading scholars on a global scale. Doing so not only broadens the questions being studied, but also helps researchers consider the inter-relationships among different perspectives. In the final analysis, the best way to build understanding around a topic as diffuse as mergers and acquisitions is to be both integrative, and expansive, in choice of research questions and theoretical underpinnings. "Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions" offers this unique perspective, not easily found elsewhere, that will help scholars think about mergers and acquisitions in new ways, building our knowledge base on this critical topic.

This volume critically reviews the phenomenon of the aging workforce, adopting an interdisciplinary perspective that examines the challenges raised on an individual, organizational and societal level. Core issues framing the concept of the aging workforce and its consequences are presented by a team of leading contributors from around the world. Despite the visible trend towards a much older global population and workforce, research on the aging workforce, employment and retirement is in its infancy and faces a range of paradoxes. Taking under consideration all the challenges, ranging from the microenvironment of the individual level (individual, family, friends) to the organizational and macro-environment of the society (infrastructure, services, legislations etc.), this is an essential resource for policymakers and organizations designing strategies to address the challenge of the ageing society. Scholars, graduates and researchers in occupational and health psychology, human resources, business and management, as well as sociology, will gain a better understanding of the changing trends in the characteristics of the workforce through this multi-level review.

Work hours has become a 'hot topic'. This volume examines the effects of work hours on individual, family and organizational health. It considers why some people work long hours and the potential costs and benefits of this investment. Some work long hours out of necessity, others willingly. Interestingly, most people, however, want to work fewer hours than they now do. One's motives for working long hours (the why) and one's attitudes and behaviours while working (the how) emerge as critical factors in the link between work hours and well-being.Contributions from experts from six countries address workaholism, the distinction between passion and addiction to work, 'loving one's job', the role of technology as an enabler of long work hours, consequences of fatigue from over-work, strategies for short-term recovery from long hours, and initiatives for enriching one's quality of life. Coming to grips with work hours requires difficult choices by individuals, families, organizations and society at large. This collection will be of value to managers and professionals concerned about people, and academics, students, researchers and policy makers interested in ways work can be meaningful, decent rather than debilitating.
Each collection of articles that makes up a volume of Advances in
Mergers and Acquisitions paints a picture of contemporary research
on this topic. In this volume, we have seven contributions from
scholars in North America, Europe, and Asia, and these papers
collectively address acquisition strategy and acquisition
integration, successful deals and unsuccessful ones, ownership
structure and managerial structure, risk and return, knowledge
preservation and knowledge transfer, building trust and cultivating
emotions, and alliances and networks. This breadth of attention
across the spectrum of research possibilities on mergers and
acquisitions is remarkable in that it suggests both that this topic
has morphed in recent years to encompass a broad array of issues
that go far beyond what earlier generations of scholars concerned
themselves with, and that there is still so much more to be learned
about the processes and performance of mergers and acquisitions.
Almost everything we do as humans is influenced by our personalities. The study of personalities has been a topic of great interest and debate from the earliest psychologists to present day researchers who specialize in applications of personality theory in the education and business worlds. This set of critical readings in personality theory brings together all the major contributions in the field. All the classical papers on the critical theories of personality are included, as well as more contemporary work on cross-cultural and social approaches. With an emphasis throughout on looking at the major issues in personality work, key topics covered include: how personality is defined; how personality can be measured; how different personalities interact; how personality work should be conducted; and how personality is applied in education, business and clinical settings. Central issues associated with personality, such as assessment, and topics allied to personality, such as motivation, nature versus nurture, expectancies and attributions, and the self are also addressed.
Mergers, acquisitions, and alliances continue to be almost an everyday feature of the contemporary business scene, yet at least half prove to be unsuccessful. The authors show the contribution that psychology can make to our understanding of the merger phenomena - how it affects organizational performance, and how it affects the managers and employees involved. Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances is intended as a guide to successful organizational marriage. Great emphasis is placed on the issue of cultural compatibility as it concerns partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes. The book also focuses on cross-national mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. With the increasing economic activity within the European Union and between the unions of other countries, there is a need to know more about the corporate and national cultures in these strategic alliances. The authors have drawn upon an extensive body of research based on recent cases in a wide cross section of industries across Europe. The book is unique in showing the actual effect mergers and acquisitions have on people, and consequently on the performance of the 'new' organization. It will be particularly relevant for decision makers - those who are involved in planning and implementing a large organizational change, and those responsible for ensuring successful integration afterwards. It would also be extremely useful for postgraduate management students, personnel executives and management consultants.
The world of work and organization has become increasingly
demanding and turbulent as firms respond to forces of
globalization, the introduction of new technology, requirements to
increase revenues while decreasing costs, and the needs of a more
diverse workforce, while building organizational capability. Most
organizations can acquire or copy technology, manufacturing
processes, products and business strategies. However human resource
management practices and organizational culture are difficult to
copy and represent a truly unique competitive advantage.. Managers
are coming to believe that the most important organizational
resource is human. This collection presents research evidence and company examples
developed over the past decade showing how to create organizations
that add value to investors, customers and employees. It first
illustrates why and how human resource management practices become
a competitive advantage. These practices are also reviewed in an
international context, an increasingly important reality as
business become more global.
The issue of mental health at work has become a hot topic in both the popular media and academic writings. Although job stress and mental ill-health are associated with negative outcomes for individuals, teams, and organizations, there has been some suggestion that changing the work environment and creating healthy workplaces can improve worker health. Much of the current works in the general of health is fractured, coming from a variety of disciplines and perspectives without an organizing framework to help guide research and practice in the area. Having this individualized, compartmentalized perspective constrains our ability to fully understand the scope of the issue, the key factors in supporting or detracting from one’s mental health, and interventions focusing on mental health at work. Given the importance of understanding mental health at work and the current lack of coverage on workplace mental health, there is a need for a book to provide a holistic overview of the issue targeting the environmental, individual, and group influences of mental health and well-being, as well as the impact on individuals and workplaces. This handbook provides a conceptual framework for examining these issues. Each chapter offers an in-depth examination of the key facets of mental health at work, focusing both on the seminal and current literature on the topic and practical suggestions for best practices for organizations. With contributions from leading experts, authors address the state-of-the-art research and integrate current events that are shaping the way we work and our wellbeing at work. This edited collection will be of interest to researchers, academics, policymakers, and advanced students in the fields of human resource management, organizational psychology, and management.
