This book critically investigates the notion of democracy without
demos by unravelling the link that modern history has established
between the concepts of democracy and the sovereignty of the
people. This task is imposed on us by globalization. The
individualization of the subject of rights is the result of the
destruction of regimes of special rights of ancient societies by
the centralizing action of a territorial power. This
individualization, because it implies equality, has created a new
form of political subjectivity that has been the driving force of
the democratization of democracies during the 19th and 20th
centuries. Democracy and subjective rights discusses how asserting
itself as the only guarantor of rights, the modern state has also
nationalized citizenship. However, the author argues, the legal and
judicial monopoly of the nation-state is weakened today by the
multiplication and heterogeneity of the powers on which the rights
of individuals depend. This situation forces us to denationalize
citizenship without sacrificing, however, the specific form of
political subjectivity that the individualization of rights has
made possible.

Carl Schmitt's thought serves as a warning against the dangers of
complacency entailed by triumphant liberalism. His conception of
politics is a sharp challenge to those who believe that the
blurring of frontiers between the left and right and the increasing
mobilization of political discourse constitute great advances for
democracy. Schmitt reminds us forcefully that the essence of
politics is a struggle and that the distinction between friend and
enemy cannot be abolished.
This is an important and unparalleled work which situated Marx's
economic theory in relation to the economic theories that predate
him - from mercantilism to John Stuart Mill. First published in
1929, the book dates from the fertile period of Marxist economic
theory that produced the works of Preobrazhensky, Kondratiev and
Bukharin. However as a review of pre-Marxist economics it stands
out from the many books which dwell only on the contemporary
industrialisation debates. This is a selective reading of economic
thought, offering analysis of those elements in past economics that
accord with the areas of interest to Marxism. Each section gives a
brief analysis of a specific school of thought, with particular
attention to the social and ideological climate within which it
evolved. The book differs from orthodox accounts in not merely
mentioning historical background but using it as a central
explanation of the evolution of economic theories. As a
counterpoint to Rubin, Catherine Colliot-Thelene has written a
daring essay which locates a crucial flaw in the logical structure
of Marx's Capital.
