Yugoslavia and Political Assassinations - The History and Legacy of Tito's Campaign Against the Emigres (Hardcover):... Yugoslavia and Political Assassinations - The History and Legacy of Tito's Campaign Against the Emigres (Hardcover)
Christian Axboe Nielsen
R3,624 Discovery Miles 36 240 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Yugoslavia and Political Assassinations is the first book in English to analyse how and why the Yugoslav State Security Service carried out multiple targeted assassinations, over the country's forty-six years of existence, under the pretext of protecting the Yugoslav communist party-state. Offering a detailed history of the programme, from the inception of the State Security Service to the recent trials of individuals involved, it draws on Christian Axboe Nielsen's unique wealth of experience and research as an academic and as an expert witness in numerous criminal trials. The result is a ground-breaking contribution to the history of targeted assassinations, communist history, state security services and related criminal trials.

Mass Atrocities and the Police - A New History of Ethnic Cleansing in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Hardcover): Christian Axboe... Mass Atrocities and the Police - A New History of Ethnic Cleansing in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Hardcover)
Christian Axboe Nielsen
R3,154 Discovery Miles 31 540 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Between April 1992 and December 1995, more than 100,000 people were killed in the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The terrible atrocities committed in this period have been much discussed and studied and many prosecuted as acts of genocide, war crimes or crimes against humanity. But so far, the academic scholarship has focused on the role of the military in these events. This has come at the expense of considering the police’s role, which Nielsen here demonstrates as crucial. Nielsen traces the origins of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina to the police and associated paramilitary groups. Nielsen makes this ground-breaking case by drawing on a host of confidential archival sources, academic research and practical experience as a widely cited expert witness in the most notorious of the war crimes tribunals. His innovative new history sheds light on wider issues regarding the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the Balkan wars and the region today.

Making Yugoslavs - Identity in King Aleksandar's Yugoslavia (Paperback): Christian Axboe Nielsen Making Yugoslavs - Identity in King Aleksandar's Yugoslavia (Paperback)
Christian Axboe Nielsen
R979 Discovery Miles 9 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

When Yugoslavia was created in 1918, the new state was a patchwork of Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, and other ethnic groups. It still was in January 1929, when King Aleksandar suspended the Yugoslav constitution and began an ambitious program to impose a new Yugoslav national identity on his subjects. By the time Aleksandar was killed by an assassin's bullet five years later, he not only had failed to create a unified Yugoslav nation but his dictatorship had also contributed to an increase in interethnic tensions.

In Making Yugoslavs, Christian Axboe Nielsen uses extensive archival research to explain the failure of the dictatorship's program of forced nationalization. Focusing on how ordinary Yugoslavs responded to Aleksandar's nationalization project, the book illuminates an often-ignored era of Yugoslav history whose lessons remain relevant not just for the study of Balkan history but for many multiethnic societies today.
