Evolving Theories on the Origin of the Moon (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Warren D. Cummings Evolving Theories on the Origin of the Moon (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Warren D. Cummings
R3,533 Discovery Miles 35 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book follows the development of research on the origin of the Moon from the late 18th century to the present. By gathering together the major texts, papers, and events of the time, it provides a thorough chronicle of the paradigmatic shift in planetary science that arose from the notion that the Earth-Moon system was formed from two colliding planetary bodies. The book covers pre-Apollo ideas, the conceptual evolution during and subsequent to the Apollo explorations of the Moon, and the development of the Earth-Moon system consensus. A plethora of excerpts from key publications are included to demonstrate the shift in scientific focus over the centuries. Through its comprehensive review of lunar science research and literature, this book shows how new technologies and discoveries catalyzed the community and revolutionized our understanding of the Moon's formation.

Galectins - Methods and Protocols (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Sean R. Stowell, Richard D.... Galectins - Methods and Protocols (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Sean R. Stowell, Richard D. Cummings
R5,154 Discovery Miles 51 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Galectins: Methods and Protocols is the first book solely dedicated to methodological approaches designed to study galectin function. The galectin family represents one of the most pleiotropic families, with individual members having been implicated in various aspects of nearly every biological process described, from RNA splicing to complex regulatory circuits that orchestrate adaptive immunity. Given the diverse roles of galectins in a variety of biological systems, studying these glycan binding proteins often requires the assimilation of diverse technical skills to fully appreciate their biological function. Their nearly ubiquitous expression and ability to bind highly modifiable carbohydrate ligands, in addition to a variety of other regulatory proteins, allows these glycan binding proteins (GBPs) to possess the capacity to regulate a wide variety of biological processes. Individual chapters are dedicated to examining salient features of galectin functions. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and easily accessible, Galectins: Methods and Protocols seeks to serve both professionals and novices with a useful framework when examining galectin function for many years to come.

The Fluency Construct - Curriculum-Based Measurement Concepts and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Kelli D Cummings,... The Fluency Construct - Curriculum-Based Measurement Concepts and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Kelli D Cummings, Yaacov Petscher
R3,015 Discovery Miles 30 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive overview of fluency as a construct and its assessment in the context of curriculum-based measurement (CBM). Comparing perspectives from language acquisition, reading, and mathematics, the book parses the vagueness and complexities surrounding fluency concepts and their resulting impact on testing, intervention, and students' educational development. Applications of this knowledge in screening and testing, ideas for creating more targeted measures, and advanced methods for studying fluency data demonstrate the overall salience of fluency within CBM. Throughout, contributors argue for greater specificity and nuance in isolating skills to be measured and improved, and for terminology that reflects those educational benchmarks. Included in the coverage: Indicators of fluent writing in beginning writers. Fluency in language acquisition, reading, and mathematics. Foundations of fluency-based assessments in behavioral and psychometric paradigms. Using response time and accuracy data to inform the measurement of fluency. Using individual growth curves to model reading fluency. Latent class analysis for reading fluency research. The Fluency Construct: Curriculum-Based Measurement Concepts and Applications is an essential resource for researchers, graduate students, and professionals in clinical child and school psychology, language and literature, applied linguistics, special education, neuropsychology, and social work.

Survival - : A Moral Response to Global Warming (Paperback): Grace D. Cumming Survival - : A Moral Response to Global Warming (Paperback)
Grace D. Cumming
R291 Discovery Miles 2 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Scientists, who study global warming and the impacts it increasingly will be having on our planet, consistently express concern about survival. If our global home suffers even a moderate percentage of the problems about which scientists warn us, all earth's life forms will be in survival mode. How shall we respond? In this book, the author summarizes the changing realities of global warming and explores newly revealed knowledge about how humans have survived over time. We are learning that our natural moral abilities are resources for living through the difficult times that are ahead on a changing planet. These fresh understandings provide a positive way to view human morality; they give us hope that survival mode will not devolve into warring nations, communities, families, individuals. Grace D. Cumming, PhD, combines a scholarly approach to science and ethics with a unique perspective shaped by both 30 years of nursing and her lifetime experiences as a daughter, mother, and grandmother. The results will surprise you.

Grace Cumming Long provides us with a Christian ethics from the perspective of women's experience, rooted in passion and reason, emotion and research. Through a collage of autobiographical narratives and feminist theologies Cumming Long constructs an unconventional approach to moral questioning, using the arts of cooking, painting, quilting, and weaving to illuminate how Christians must be creative in finding faithful ways to respond to God and to the social crises of our day. She examines welfare, reproductive choice, addiction, handicapping conditions, and AIDS within her ethical framework, and maintains that cooperation, dependence, creativity, and the compassionate use of power are the theological values Christians bring to an ethics that move us beyond patriarchy.

The Dixification of America - The American Odyssey into the Conservative Economic Trap (Hardcover, New): Stephen D. Cummings The Dixification of America - The American Odyssey into the Conservative Economic Trap (Hardcover, New)
Stephen D. Cummings
R2,038 Discovery Miles 20 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In mid-July 1997, just as the Dow Jones Industrial Average broke 8,000, the federal government announced that personal bankruptcies were at an all-time high, and Second Harvest, the largest food bank network in America, reported increased demand at half of its distribution centers. But this paradox is not new. Throughout the last decade, economists have extolled the virtues and successes of the U.S. economy, while plants have closed, companies have downsized, and those who remain are fearful about their jobs. Contrary to popular opinion, the free-spending liberals have not driven this country to its current level of economic anxiety; it is, in fact, the conservatives. Current economic policy, Cummings argues, is the product of a union between conservative Republican and conservative Southern economic policy-a union that began in the late 1960s. Before the 1960s, the Southern economy operated as a conservative economic incubator isolated from the rest of the country, and conservative Republicans had to contend with both Democrats and liberal Republicans. After 1969, with Republicans in the White House and with the help of Wallace supporters and later Reagan Democrats, Southern conservative economic policy combined with Republican policy and was gradually exported to the rest of the country. This collaboration and its growing political influence culminated in the Republican control of Congress in the 1990s. Over the decades the South has become more Republican and Southern leaders have had an increasing influence in the Republican Party and in economic policy as a whole. The conservative policy initiatives from this political union have led to some of the same economic problems that have plagued the South since Reconstruction and, fostered by conservative Republicans in the 1920s, ushered in the Great Depression. Current policies, argues Cummings, are leading the country into a similar trap.
