Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Beginning in December 2019, the coronavirus swept quickly through
all regions of the world. COVID-19 has wreaked social, political
and economic havoc everywhere and has shown few signs of entirely
abating. The recent development and approval of new vaccines
against the virus, however, now provides some hope that we may be
coming to the beginning of the end of the pandemic. This volume
collects papers from a conference titled Economic Dimensions of
COVID-19 in Indonesia: Responding to the Crisis, organised by the
Australian National University's Indonesia Project and held online,
7-10 September 2020. Collectively, the chapters in this volume
focus for the most part on the economic elements of COVID-19 in
Indonesia. The volume considers both macro- and micro-economic
effects across a variety of dimensions, and short- and long-term
impacts as well. It constitutes the first comprehensive analysis of
Indonesia's initial response to the crisis from an economic
perspective.
Biofilms are the default mode-of-life for many bacterial species.
The three-dimensional structure of the biofilm provides the
associated microbial communities with additional protection from
predation, toxic substances, and physical perturbation. The variety
of microniches provided by the biofilm also promotes a huge
diversity of microbial life and metabolic potential. These complex
and highly structured communities help to maintain the health of
soils and waters. Current applications of biofilms include the
degradation of toxic substances in soil and water, the commercial
production of chemicals, and the generation of electricity.
However, biofilm-based infections cause harm to millions of humans
annually. In addition, biofilms can affect the quality and yield of
crops and cause biofouling and microbially-induced corrosion. In
this book, leading scientists provide an up-to-date review of the
latest scientific research on these fascinating microbial
communities and predict future trends and growth areas in
biofilm-related research. The book will be essential for everyone
interested in biofilms and their applications. It is also highly
recommended for environmental microbiologists, soil scientists,
medical microbiologists, bioremediation experts, and
microbiologists working in biocorrosion, biofouling,
biodegradation, water microbiology, quorum sensing, and many other
areas.
Most American Indian reservations are islands of poverty in a sea
of wealth, but they do not have to remain that way. To extract
themselves from poverty, Native Americans will have to build on
their rich cultural history including familiarity with markets and
integrate themselves into modern economies by creating institutions
that reward productivity and entrepreneurship and that establish
tribal governments that are capable of providing a stable rule of
law. The chapters in this volume document the involvement of
indigenous people in market economies long before European contact,
provide evidence on how the wealth of Indian Nations has been held
hostage to bureaucratic red tape, and explains how their wealth can
be unlocked through self-determination and sovereignty.
The area of analysis and control of mechanical systems using
differential geometry is flourishing.
This book collects many results over the last decade and
provides a comprehensive introduction to the area.
The subject of algebraic cycles has thrived through its interaction
with algebraic K-theory, Hodge theory, arithmetic algebraic
geometry, number theory, and topology. These interactions have led
to such developments as a description of Chow groups in terms of
algebraic K-theory, the arithmetic Abel-Jacobi mapping, progress on
the celebrated conjectures of Hodge and Tate, and the conjectures
of Bloch and Beilinson. The immense recent progress in algebraic
cycles, based on so many interactions with so many other areas of
mathematics, has contributed to a considerable degree of
inaccessibility, especially for graduate students. Even specialists
in one approach to algebraic cycles may not understand other
approaches well. This book offers students and specialists alike a
broad perspective of algebraic cycles, presented from several
viewpoints, including arithmetic, transcendental, topological,
motives and K-theory methods. Topics include a discussion of the
arithmetic Abel-Jacobi mapping, higher Abel-Jacobi regulator maps,
polylogarithms and L-series, candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtrations,
applications of Chern-Simons invariants to algebraic cycles via the
study of algebraic vector bundles with algebraic connection,
motivic cohomology, Chow groups of singular varieties, and recent
progress on the Hodge and Tate conjectures for Abelian varieties.
This book provides an autobiographical and research-based
exploration of the perceptions of Black middle and upper class
preservice teachers about teaching and learning in high poverty
urban schools. While there is an extensive body of knowledge on
White preservice teachers, limited studies examine Black middle and
upper class preservice teachers who may also lack experience with
students in high poverty urban schools. Through this narrative, the
author explores her own professional journey and a research study
of former students who experienced the same boundary crossing.
Their voices add to the body of current knowledge of how race and
class affect the perceptions of preservice teachers.
So you think you've got a handle on therapeutic management? How
drugs work and interact with each other, how the body handles them
and how drug treatments are assessed?
This self-assessment volume allows you to learn, revise and test
yourself on all aspects of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics.
Four different question types are provided to test your knowledge
in this important area - multiple choice questions, extended
matching questions, best of fives and problem-solving questions.
Detailed explanatory answers ensure this book solves your queries
as well as providing essential revision for those all-important
exams.
Test your knowledge with Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics:
Questions for Self Assessment and not only develop your exam
technique but become a better prescriber.
The year 2020 marks the centenary of the passing of the 19th
Amendment that allowed for women in the United States to vote. The
strategic struggle of women demanding equal dignity and the right
to vote in the United States helped to shed light on the systemic
evils that have plagued the collective history of the country.
Ideologies of racism, genderism, classism, and many more were and
continue to be used to deny women their dignities both in the
United States and in other parts of the world. This work sheds
light on the intersectionality of religion, class, gender,
philosophy, theology, and culture as they shape the experiences of
women, especially women of color. A fundamental question that this
volume aims to address is: What does it mean to be a woman of color
in a world where systems of erasure dominate? The title of this
volume is meant to showcase a deliberate engagement with the
uncelebrated insights and perspectives of women of color in a world
where systemic discrimination persists, and to articulate new
strategies and paradigms for recognizing their contributions to the
broader struggles for freedom and equity of women in our world.
* Provides gifted educators with a researcher-based model for
effective professional learning to increase equity in their
programs. * Offers practical tools and strategies to help the
reader absorb, reflect on, and then use in professional learning
with fellow teachers, parents, and gifted advocates. * Acknowledges
that a one-size-fits-all professional learning model does not work
for everyone and provides practical ways to tailor the experience
to individual learning communities.
Righteous Indignation: Christian Philosophical and Theological
Perspectives on Anger explores the philosophy of Christian
anger-what anger is, what it means for God to be angry, and when
anger is morally appropriate. The book explores specific biblical
questions, such as how God communicates his anger in the Old
Testament and whether anger at one's enemies in the imprecatory
psalms is praiseworthy. In addition, some chapters focus on the
practical application of anger to topics such as racial justice,
criminal law, and civil discourse, and on the ideas of historical
figures such as Thomas Aquinas and Jonathan Edwards. The purpose of
the book is to provide multiple perspectives, examining anger from
different angles, but most of all it is hoped that readers will
come away with a better understanding of God's nature and how
followers of Jesus ought to relate to those who wrong them.
